And it is over! Yes, the YMCA Alumni Service Project 1.0 is now officially completed with the Twig project being handed over to Andy Andrew Corley, CEO of the YMCA of the Seven Council Fires from National Service Project Chair Lou Falk and Twig Project Coordinator Steve Rowe. It is hard to believe that this undertaking began six years ago with a brainstorming session to select a project that would have universal appeal to our YMCA Alumni membership nationwide! And were we ever successful with the excitement of members to help the YMCA of the Seven Council Fires address their housing deficiency for single parent families, mostly mothers with young children as well as building a Twig Program Center in one of their isolated communities.

As the author of this YMCA Alumni Facebook National Service Project page every Wednesday for five and a half years, I tried to keep you, the YMCA Alumni membership, informed with our NSP progress on fundraising and construction. Regardless if my wife Anne and I were traveling in Europe with our many trips over the years, I never missed a week even when struggling with European WiFi to post my project updates.

Thanks to all of you readers for following this weekly post! It was always exciting to see who was “liking” the post as well as reading your comments! It meant a lot to our project leadership and the hundreds of Wave volunteers!

Congratulations to Lou Falk and everyone involved as well as all of the donors, volunteers, workers and supporters! Because of you we took our “Field of Dreams” and turned it into a reality by supporting the mission and goals of the YMCA of the Seven Council Fires!

I also want to thank Craig Altschul and Peggi Simmons of Craig Altschul & Associates who are the managers and content creaters of the YMCA Alumni page for their support and help to partner with us to use the page for weekly updates on the National Service Project!

So who is the actual author of the Wednesday National Service Project Facebook postings? My name is Harry Rock and I am a member of the YMCA Alumni New England Chapter! I am a Y retiree who had a fabulous 36 year career, having started as a teen finding my love for the Y at the Camp Hazen YMCA in Chester, Connecticut as a cabin councilor, even being married there years later! It has been my honor and pleasure to have kept this page going for all of you for five and a half years! This will be my last official Wednesday National Service Project posting. Did you know Kansas City, MO, site of the YMCA Alumni Reunion ’27, is famous for its BBQ? It all started during the KC Jazz Era with Henry Perry, the father of Kansas City’s BBQ. In those days you could get a small portion of BBQ meats wrapped in newspaper for 25 cents. Today you can visit a different BBQ establishment for 3.5 months straight and not visit the same place twice. Not sure which one to choose? Sample the best as part of the reunion’s BBQ night. After six years of planning, fundraising, volunteer recruiting, and construction, it is hard to believe that the National Service Project 1.0 is now completed! Both the Tiny Home and the Twig projects are wrapped up and now in the hands of the YMCA Seven Council Fires! National Service Project Chair Lou Falk announced that the scope of the work that was agreed upon by members of the YMCA Alumni National Service Project Standing Committee has been completed with Wave 6 recently finishing their work on the Twig Project. The entire project with the Tiny Homes and the Twig are now officially under the leadership of the YMCA of the Seven Council Fires with CEO Andy Andrew Corley and his team.

There is much to celebrate with this project which raised over $1.1 million and built four Tiny Homes and one Twig Program Center on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Reservation in partnership with the YMCA of the Seven Council Fires. The dedication of hundreds of volunteers and even more donors and supporters made this historic project a reality!

We are grateful for the leadership of National Service Project Chair Lou Falk who kept a highly motivated leadership team focused and moving in the right direction through the years of monthly meetings with the Standing Committee, the Construction Committee, the Fundraising Committee, the Recognition Committee, the Volunteer Committee and so many more! It was truly a team effort made up of people who put the needs of others in front of themselves to help improve the quality of life of individuals and families who have so little on the reservation!

Thank you to everyone involved! We proved that a small but committed team of dedicated YMCA Alumni volunteers could achieve lasting and meaningful impact of a historic fashion with a project of this magnitude!

The YMCA Alumni National Service Project Standing Committee under the leadership of chair Lou Falk met recently on Zoom to discuss the progress of the Twig project in La Plant, South Dakota on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Reservation. There was plenty of enthusiasm on the call as the group reviewed the work that has been accomplished and what is still remaining.

The photos below show wall framing going on, sound insulation being installed, the porch/balcony for the staff apartment being built, painting taking place, dry wall going up, a bathroom door being installed, cement work, and so much more! It is exciting to see how much progress has been made to date with all of our volunteer workers! YMCA Alumni chapters nationwide are celebrating fall with a variety of October events. The largest is the 3-chapter (New England, McBurney-Morse, Central Atlantic) Cape Cod gathering in Falmouth, MA. Not to be outdone is Schreiner’s Fall Gathering in Arlington, TX, Mott’s Fall Meeting in Des Moines, IA, and Weatherford’s Annual Fall Festival at Blue Ridge Assembly, NC. McCoy members are heading to the Exploratorium Museum in San Francisco, CA, Marston is “Octoberfesting” in Poway, CA, Upper Midwest is touring the MN state capitol in St. Paul, and Willis is lunching in Sarasota, FL. Here are a number of random photos from Wave 5 with volunteers working on the YMCA Alumni Twig project. Some show the painting and insulating of the walls and floors as well as framing taking place inside the containers. There was one remaining foundation that had to be poured with cement from a portable mixer in preparation for the stacking of the containers to create the Twig.

Our volunteers do it all regardless of the skills they bring to the work site! They always figure it out to keep the project moving forward. We have one Wave remaining so it will be interesting to see how far they get on completing this project by the end of their week of work! Work is well underway with our dedicated YMCA Alumni National Service Project volunteers! They are working on the Twig which is located in LaPlant, SD on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Reservation in partnership with the YMCA Seven Council Fires. This exciting transformation of three shipping containers into a functioning YMCA Program Center will wrap up in the next few weeks!
