The YMCA Alumni National Service Project Twig Committee recently meet under the leadership of coordinator Steve Rowe. The purpose of the meeting was to provide an update on project planning and discussing construction details for the Volunteer Waves once they arrive. YMCA Seven Council Fires CEO Andy Andrew Corley provided updates on the cement foundation and moving the shipping containers to the site. HVAC pricing is being firmed up. Steve announced that the cabinets and general kitchen costs have increased.

Gary Douglas Graham and Lee Muckey updated the committee on how registration is going and what the needs will be for volunteers for the various Waves. Once people register, they will receive a detailed letter from Gary with the project specifics related to lodging, meals and transportation. YMCA Alumni President Phill Morgan will be attending Wave 1.

Refer to the June 2nd issue of The CONNECTION for the dates of the Volunteer Waves and the email addresses for Gary and Lee for information on volunteering. As I travel through France taking in all of the historic sites thousands of years old, I am reflective of how fortunate I am to be able to do this while so many people are just focused on their daily living and housing needs in the Dominican Republic and on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Reservation!

Thanks to Lou Falk for his leadership to make both of these projects so successful! YMCA Alumni members are using their own good fortune to give back and make a difference in those individuals less fortunate by building homes. We have the YMCA spirit in our souls to want to make an impact in other people’s lives! A big thanks to all of you involved with these projects! Papa Lou Falk is back in the village of Don Gregorio, Dominican Republic leading another group of YMCA Alumni volunteers to build another home in that extremely deprived community. This history of building homes in partnership with the Dominican Republic YMCA for the past 15 years was the source of the inspiration for the home building project on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Reservation with the Tiny Home Project in partnership with the YMCA Seven Council Fires.

What a legacy of volunteer service by our YMCA Alumni members to help those who are less fortunate than ourselves! The desire to help others was the motivation for the birth of the YMCA on June 6, 1844 in London with George Williams! That desire still exists today with our YMCA Alumni volunteers! Congratulations to everyone involved with the Dominican Republic project and the Twig project which will be starting in August. The National Service Project Twig Construction Committee met recently under the leadership of project coordinator Steve Rowe to continue working on planning and detail management. Work is continuing behind the scenes with YMCA Seven Council Fires CEO Andy Andrew Corley lining up bids and confirming dates for the cement footings, electrical, septic and plumbing work to be completed prior to volunteers arriving. YMCA of Seven Council Fires Board of Directors Chair and architect Annie Coombs stated that the shipping containers will be insulated with a spray insulation underneath the containers before being placed on their cement footings. She also stated that there will be eight windows and two doors installed in the Twig. Andy is coordinating when the shipping containers will be transported from the Tiny Home site to the new Twig location.

There will be approximately ten workers per wave. Interested people should contact volunteer coordinator Gary Douglas Graham via Facebook Messenger for details on available waves, lodging, costs and how to register. More information will be coming in the June 2nd issue of The CONNECTION.
