The YMCA Alumni website https://www.ymcaalumni.org has undergone a mini “refresh” recently making it faster and easier to navigate the site, starting with the home page. The three “hamburger” (web jargon) lines that used to appear in the upper right hand home page corner have been replaced by “menu” which, when clicked, gives you access to each clearly marked individual section. A new page makes its debut: World Programs and Partners showcases International Service Corps (ISC) and World Fellowship of YMCA Retirees (WFYR). Take a look at allthe changes. In fact, take a look at the entire site.

Copied below is a recent newsletter update from the YMCA Seven Council Fires! It is exciting to see how close the Y is to finishing their Tiny Home #5. What an exciting addition this will make to the Morning Star Village.

It is also terrific to see the excitement that the Y has for the start of work on the Twig in September with volunteers. Work has already started with contractor’s. What an exciting partnership this has been with the YMCA of the Seven Council Fires. HOORAY!!! Work has officially started on the Twig Project with the start of Wave 1 this past Tuesday, August 18th! The contractors will be working on grading the site, pouring concrete for the base and moving the shipping containers on site. Contractors will continue working through Wave 2 before YMCA Alumni volunteers and friends show up on location to actually work on the new Twig! It is exciting to be at the point where work has begun after months and months of planning! We are optimistic that our funding will hold out along with the number of volunteers needed to get us through Wave 6 and completion! Stay tuned over the next six weeks for weekly updates on our progress! Look for the August 15 issue of Perspective in your email and on the website https://tinyurl.com/yeks63j4 under the tab “Newsletters and More.” Read it as an e-zine or print out the pdf and read at a later time. Either way…it’s the same news. This issue’s theme, “Service…So Many Ways, ” represents a variety of members’ choices – and there are many. From homebuilding to animal sanctuaries to church-related activities to feeding the hungry to international work. But, wait - that’s just a sampling. Enjoy the read!

The Twig Planning Committee recently met under the leadership of Steve Rowe to discuss the final logistics of the new YMCA Seven Council Fires program center to be built in La Plant, SD. National Service Project Chair Lou Falk and project fundraiser Gary Douglas Graham offered details about welcoming volunteers for each wave. Volunteer coordinator Linda Dean discussed where to purchase food and travel logistics from the Rapid City airport. Architect Annie Coombs shared some final renderings of what the program center is going to look like.

This is an exciting time as we draw close to the first waves beginning work with the contractors grading the site, pouring concrete and moving the shipping containers to the location in preparation for construction. It will be just a matter of a couple of months now before this exciting project draws to a close!

Thanks to all of the YMCA Alumni volunteers, Y staff, contractors, donors and supporters for making this project possible! This creates a huge opportunity for the YMCA to further expand its programming impact to a small underserved community. The Twig Planning Committee for the National Service Project met recently under the leadership of Project Coordinator Steve Rowe. Committee members offered updates and input on the plans for when construction starts in just two weeks with the contractors. There are still many details to be worked out but National Service Chair Lou Falk expressed optimism that the project will be completed to the scope of what the NSP has committed to.

There are still openings for volunteers in Waves 3, 4, 5 & 6. Contact Gary Douglas Graham at [email protected] or Lee Muckey at [email protected] for details. We hope you will consider joining us for this exciting project! George Painter.
