Meet Premium Cigar, the newest member of our family. This handsome, 19 year old Standardbred arrived March 12 from North Carolina. Cigar is a beautiful gelding with excellent manners and is a pleasure to be around. Oh, he’s also blind. Sadly, most folks don’t have the proper place to keep a blind horse, so once a horse becomes blind their future is not bright. Rainhill currently has 32 blind horses. I see all that they possess and not what they are lacking.
I’m so happy Cigar is here. Rest easy new friend, we will love and comfort you.

Today Rainhill welcomes another Standardbred, 17 year old Sudden Paradise, into our barn. We don’t know his history so his history starts with us. He arrived thin but that is something we can easily correct. He does have some paralysis effecting his lower lip. At Rainhill, we aren’t concerned with any physical limitations the horse might have. This horse has paid his dues and he has nothing to prove. He has found his forever home at Rainhill.

I would like to thank the Standardbred Retirement Foundation and Judy Bokman for working diligently to save these horses from a grisly fate. Also, thanks to Mary Johnson for her financial support. As in past saves, this was a team effort.

Say hello to our newest blind Standardbred mare. She came from Second Chance Livestock in Belfast, New York. She’s what I call a snowball horse. Yes, this twenty one year old sightless, worn out and discarded mare didn’t have a snowball’s chance of finding a home. No one wanted her and soon she would be getting on the truck with all the others, heading to that “bad place”.
Instead, here she is with us at Rainhill. She arrived on Saturday, August 30. We call her Belle, after the town she came from. Belle is adjusting nicely and is certainly enjoying her stall and the peace that we offer.
We are happy you are here ! Relax and enjoy your new home.

Say hello to Rainhill’s newest resident. His registered name is Big Money Machine, I call him Cash. He came here from a place out west where he was rescued from a kill pen. Those folks could not keep him any longer and to make a long story short, he was brought here. Cash is twelve. He is a Thoroughbred gelding who won over $100,00 by racing 101 times. He was raced in claiming races from Florida to some place up north. Let’s just say he had many owners. Maybe some were good. Maybe. I don’t know all the sad details but, as you can see, he wound up in a very bad place. The place out west patched him up and after six weeks there sent him to us.
Cash has been here about two weeks.
The video was taken yesterday. I love him !

This is the group of horses that I call the herd. Except for one mare, they have all been together for about 20 years. They are a happy group living as nature intended.

Say hello to Andy ! He’s our newest blind resident that arrived late last night from Texas. Andy started his sad journey in Kalona , Iowa, where he was purchased by a horse trader who lives in Rusk, Texas.
Andy is said to be an eight year old Standardbred gelding. Not much more is known about his past but everything that I need to now about him will soon become apparent. Horses do not lie and through his actions and reactions I will soon discover all that is important to know about him.
For now, Andy will relax and adjust to a life without toil and trouble. Welcome Home Andy !
