More than three centuries ago, James Carroll of Fingaul opened his daybook and recorded the names of the enslaved and indentured people whose labor formed part of his household and plantation.
Among the names he recorded was Mary Queen, an indentured servant brought from London whose struggle for freedom would echo through generations of her descendants.
Today, 311 years later, we pause to remember the people behind those handwritten names—not simply as entries in an account book, but as individuals whose lives, families, and stories deserve to be remembered.
We remember their names. We honor their lives.
