How Rocket Rescue Begain

I hadn’t talked to my old friend Joan in a month but my answering machine was blinking frantically. Her message: ” Call me! I have a lot to tell you.” I called her back, “What’s up?”

“A photo popped up on my page. It was a puppy. I get that stuff all the time, but this one looked just like my dog Rocket. I couldn’t get her out of my mind. After a few days I decided, what the heck, I’ll fill out an application. When I didn’t hear from them, I thought okay. I have to be at the fair anyway with the dog 4H group, Kidz n K9s. More days go by, then I get a phone call.

“Congratulations! You’ve been approved to adopt Ruby.” And I say,

“Where are you located?”

“Colorado City. Seventy miles east of Lubbock, Texas.” She pauses.

“Too bad” I said, but Joan wasn’t finished.

“Dave and I got in the car the next day and drove to Texas. We needed a vacation anyway. It was 108 degrees! No air conditioning in the place so the first thing we did was drive to a hardware store and buy them a big commercial fan. The rescue is Pets without Parents. They’ve only been going for a year but they’ve already saved 100 dogs. They reminded me of us, when we started Spot in 1999.” She laughs. “Remember the Rest Area fundraisers? We stayed two extra days to help out. I was even interviewed by the mayor on the local radio station. They couldn’t believe we drove 2,000 miles to adopt a dog.”

I could believe it.

What struck me most after hearing this story was that Joan hadn’t sounded so happy in years.

“Maybe we should start a rescue to help crowded shelters that are euthanizing for space.” I suggested.

That’s the story of Rocket Rescue. All because of a dog named Rocket and puppy named Ruby. A mutt who came from a place where they euthanize for space. Space… Rocket... Rocket Rescue, dedicated to finding the perfect space for homeless pets.
