We are a sponsor of this year’s Out of the Darkness Walk. Join us in raising awareness and helping save lives!

Our friends in Kankakee County recently held an event kickoff ahead of the Out of the Darkness Kankakee County Walk on Saturday, Sept. 19 at Kankakee Community College.

Since 2002, AFSP's Out of the Darkness Walks have brought friends, neighbors, family members, and colleagues together to walk through their communities to:

— Ensure su***de prevention education in local schools and workplaces
— Provide support for people who have lost loved ones
— Advocate for critical mental health and su***de prevention legislation
— Fund scientific research to help save more lives

Kankakee County is one of 14 Community Walks happening across Illinois this year. Find a Walk near you at afsp.org/ILtogether and join us! 💙

These stories were recorded live at the Juneteenth Celebration at Pioneer Park on June 20, 2026.

The Grow Center and our community partner the YWCA of Kankakee had booths at the Juneteenth Celebration Community Council Festival at Pioneer Park. Healing Stories Kankakee was onsite to record several local folks throughout the day. Watch for the podcast episodes coming soon!

We’ve hidden words at a selection of community spots. Visit the library starting May 1 to pick up your game sheet -- you'll get a prize just for signing up!

Healing Stories Kankakee is an exciting, collaborative partnership between The Grow Center, INC, Factory Listeners: Kankakee Storytelling , and the Stony Road Podcast.
*****Our next event is May 17, and we're looking for storytellers! *****
Stories will be no longer than 15 minutes with 10 minutes preferred.
Storytellers will be invited to a FREE Storytelling Workshop prior to the event - Dates TBD
Selected Storytellers will receive an honorarium for their participation and recorded stories will receive an additional honorarium upon publication of the story.*
Recording of stories will be arranged by and take place at The Grow Center.
