Tallahassee Scientific Society

Tallahassee Scientific Society TSS was established on May 23,1989 by local scientists and technologists as a public service devoted to promoting a better public understanding of science.

The Tallahassee Scientific Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a grassroots membership drawn primarily from the Tallahassee and North Florida communities. We are laypersons, scientists, engineers, religious leaders and educators who recognize the critical importance of fighting a national decline in fundamental scientific literacy. We are joined together through our Society as a mea

ns of promoting scientific literacy and a broader appreciation of science and science education in the Big Bend area. Our Society’s three main goals are:

- To improve public awareness and knowledge of science and science-related issues;
- To enhance the teaching and learning of science at all levels of public and private education and
- To provide a local forum for the timely exchange of news and information on topics related to science and technology that may impinge upon the economic, social and physical well-being of the Tallahassee and North Florida communities. The Tallahassee Scientific Society was established on May 23,1989 by local scientists and technologists as a public service devoted to promoting a better public understanding of science. The Society became incorporated as a non-profit organization under the laws of the State of Florida in September, 1990, and formally acquired 501(c)(3) status with the Internal Revenue Service in 1994. In the same year, the Society was certified by the State of Florida Department of Revenue as a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization.

Melissa Price from Mission San Luis will discuss her research in underwater archeology.

Join TSS and Melissa Price from the Mission San Luis for SciSalon@BT on March 19th at 6PM. This talk examines how a 7,000 year old archaeological site was slowly swallowed by the sea. It illustrates how oyster shells that were attached to cultural material contain useful information about the environment. Isotope analysis in particular revealed past conditions at the archaeological site as ocean water creeped into the area.
