From volunteering with AmeriCorps to serving in the U.S. Air Force, Col. Rebecca Lange (PolSci ’00) has dedicated her life to service.

A proud Forever Buff, Lange completed four overseas deployments — including Operation Iraqi Freedom — but her connection to CU Boulder never faded. While deployed in Iraq, she heard the opening notes of the CU Fight Song during a USO visit and immediately went searching for the cheerleaders.

“I was at my desk, heard the Fight Song, grabbed my flag and found the team!”

Today, Lange has come full circle as commander of CU Boulder’s Air Force ROTC Detachment 105 and chair of Aerospace Studies — a role she dreamed about for years.

Her story is a reminder that the Buff spirit travels wherever our alumni go. 💛🖤https://www.colorado.edu/alumni/2026/05/18/forever-buffs-volunteer-spotlight-colonel-rebecca-lange-polsci00

For years, North Denver residents lived with persistent odors and unanswered questions. Then they connected with CU Boulder researcher Shelly Miller.

Working together, they identified links to nearby industrial activity and documented higher pollution levels during those periods. Their research helped inform stronger city ordinances in 2016 — demonstrating how evidence can drive change.

This is the power of a public research university: partnering with communities, tackling complex challenges and turning discovery into impact that extends far beyond campus.

It didn’t take long for the BOLDERBoulder to become something bigger than expected. After its 1979 debut, participation surged, and by 1981 runners were finishing inside Folsom Field.

That connection to campus, and to Boulder itself, has defined the race ever since. The course has changed over the years, but it still winds through neighborhoods filled with spectators who turn race day into something shared.

With more than 46,000 runners in 2025, it remains one of the largest races in the country, and one people keep coming back to.

We want to see your best race-day photos! Share them in the comments and tap the link to learn more about the race's history in the latest issue of the Coloradan

Did you know that the bat, ball and glove from the 1984 film The Natural, starring Robert Redford (A&S ex’58, HonDoc Hum’87), are located at the CU Boulder Heritage Center?

In the film, Redford’s character Roy Hobbs holds onto a bat, a ball and a glove that carry more weight than the game itself. They represent time passed, choices made and the possibility of starting again.

That idea of a second act echoed Redford’s own life. Before becoming one of Hollywood’s most iconic actors and directors, Redford spent part of his early years at the University of Colorado Boulder — joining Kappa Sigma and working as a janitor at The Sink before eventually leaving to study art in Europe and later train in acting in New York.

What followed was a career that helped define American cinema, from early roles in the 1960s to his rise as a household name by the time The Natural was released.

After filming, Redford donated Roy Hobbs’ bat, ball and glove to CU Boulder, where they were later preserved at the CU Heritage Center — small artifacts tied to a much larger story of reinvention and legacy.
