What do you see when you look up at the clouds? ☁️👀

A crab? The belly of a whale? Maybe a field of mushrooms drifting across the sky? It's amazing how our brains can turn clouds into familiar shapes and scenes.

But clouds aren't just building blocks for our imagination—they can also tell us a lot about what's happening in the atmosphere. Scientists classify clouds based on their height, where they form in the sky, and other unique characteristics. Different cloud types can provide clues about changing weather conditions.

When you check the forecast, do you ever think to check the Sun? Space weather begins with the Sun—and while invisible to the naked eye, it can impact satellites, communications systems, power grids, and even astronaut safety. ☀️🚀

That's why scientists continuously monitor the Sun and space weather. Earlier this year, the NSF NCAR & UCAR Mauna Loa Solar Observatory (MLSO) resumed normal operations after the 2022 volcanic eruption, restoring a critical tool for observing the Sun's activity and tracking solar storms. And just in time to support NASA's Artemis II mission!

As astronauts travel beyond Earth's protective magnetic field, advance warning of hazardous space weather becomes increasingly important. Data from observatories like MLSO help scientists monitor solar activity and support efforts to keep astronauts safe as they journey through space!

Have you ever noticed symbols like blue triangles or red semicircles on a weather map and wondered what they mean? 🌦️

Those symbols represent weather fronts—the transition zone where different air masses meet. As fronts move through an area, they can bring dramatic changes in weather, including rain, thunderstorms, gusty winds, temperature changes, and finally clearer skies after the storm passes.

There are four main types of weather fronts:
🔵 Cold fronts
🔴 Warm fronts
🔴🔵 Stationary fronts
🟣 Occluded fronts

Each type of front forms differently and creates its own unique weather patterns! They move across the Earth's surface over multiple days, and their direction is often guided by high winds, such as Jet Streams.

Wildfires are commonly characterized by the total number of acres burned rather than the rate at which they spread. However, studying the speed of a fire adds another important dimension that can help scientists better understand, manage, and prevent fires in the future. 🔥
