Fantastic news! Meet the NCECA members who received Mudtools Essentials Kits through the NCECA Annual Appeal, supporting creative practices rooted in home studios and shared spaces across the country.

In Charlotte, Ali Potts, who recently transitioned to a home studio, shared, “I’m still figuring out what tools work best for me, so it is perfect timing… I can't wait to try out all of the tools and find new favorites.”

Bob Green works beside his home on his wife’s family’s former dairy farm in Conway, where he said, “I already use and love their flexible steel, plastic, and rubber ribs… shaping and smoothing the surface of my wheel-thrown pieces.”

In Rockwell, Melinda Daniel creates in a studio she and her husband built together and reflected, “I see these tools as something I can use myself and share with my friends and family who come and share my space and love for pottery with me.”

Lance Clawson, who works from a small home studio in Bethesda, shared, “You can never have enough tools… my gift should place me in the ‘just right’ category.”

These gifts were randomly selected through their donations to NCECA’s Annual Appeal! Congratulations to all the Mudtools Essential Kit winners!

The Mudtools Essentials Kit is a thoughtfully assembled set of the company’s most-used ribs, sponges, and shaping tools designed to support forming, refining, and finishing ceramic work at any scale. Learn more at www.mudtools.com.

Congratulations Jenny Cleary of Morton Grove as the recipient the Nidec-Shimpo VL-Whisper Potter’s Wheel — a quiet, high-performance wheel known for its smooth operation, precision, and reliability for both functional and sculptural ceramic work.

Jenny is looking forward to putting the new wheel and Mudtools Essentials Kit to use in her studio: “I’m excited to use the new Nidec-Shimpo VL-Whisper Potter’s Wheel and Mudtools Essentials Kit to push my technical skills further and refine my forms, challenging myself with more complex shapes and larger work. Having reliable, high-quality tools will allow me to focus more deeply on craftsmanship and intentionality in my process.”

For Jenny, this support marks an important shift in her practice, noting, “This gift would be transformative for my practice. It will give me the ability to work more consistently, take creative risks, and dedicate more time to growth and exploration. I see it helping me move from skill-building into a more confident, personal voice in my work.”

Congratulations, Jenny, and thank you for your support and for being part of the NCECA community. These gifts were generously donated by Nidec-Shimpo (Distributed by Daido USA) and Mudtools. Jenny was randomly selected through a generous donation to NCECA’s Annual Appeal.

JUROR | Lydia C. Thompson

This exhibition reflects the ongoing impact of the Multicultural Fellowship and its influence on the field of ceramics. The exhibition accepts a range of generations, geographies, and material approaches. The works demonstrate how clay, alongside other media, is used to examine personal and collective narratives, engage community, and contribute to broader conversations in contemporary art.

NCECA acknowledges and gives thanks to Angelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy, curator of the 2022 NCECA Annual, Belonging – Representation in Clay. We are honored to extend the life of this universal and powerful concept through this recurring exhibition series.

The call for submissions for the 2027 NCECA Annual Exhibition, Throw/Back, is now open! The exhibition’s title is a play on the verb most often applied to forming vessels on the potters wheel and an acknowledgment of the vast and diverse history of ceramics that inspires so many contemporary makers. Use the link in our bio to view the call and submit your work!

DEADLINE | WEDNESDAY, JUNE 17, 2026 (11:59PM MDT) (Please note time zone - late entries will not be accepted)

EXHIBITION DATES | March 10–June 6, 2027, hosted by The Walters Museum

CURATORS | Adriana Proser and Ellen Hoobler

As art historians of Asia and the Ancient Americas, curators Adriana Proser and Ellen Hoobler are interested in how ceramic forms endure and persist but also may undergo radical shifts in a relatively brief time. Even in the face of unimaginable personal or historical ruptures and traumas, and in times of relative stability, ceramics carry culture and meaning across centuries.

The collections of the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore include thousands of artworks, from around the world and across the centuries. Throw/Back represents an extraordinary opportunity for contemporary ceramic artists to reflect on the past, engage with the present, and envision the future.

Join us on Friday, May 8, 2026, at 12:00PM/ET for a live conversation on NCECA’s Instagram with Susan Low-Beer and Suzanne Thomson, moderated by Jasmine Baetz.

Transformation by Fire, a 10-year retrospective, originated by the Gardiner Museum in partnership with the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic, addressed issues of violence against women. Working together, the museum and clinic organized annual psychotherapeutic clay groups for women and gender diverse people who have experienced violence. The exhibition featured approximately 30 sculptures created during annual group sessions from 2003 to 2013 in the Gardiner Museum’s clay studios, led by ceramic artist Susan Low-Beer and registered psychotherapist and art therapist Suzanne Thomson.

Transformation by Fire drew on works that explore themes of Hope and Resilience, Metamorphosis, Mind and Body, and Sanctuary and Shelter. Personal statements and short videos featuring participating artists enriched viewers' experiences. This retrospective won the 2013 OMA Award of Excellence in Exhibition, illustrating the uniquely therapeutic qualities of clay.
