FROM TURTLE ISLAND TO WALLMAPU
This Indigenous Peoplesā Day, we answer the call put out by the Mapuche leaders for mass mobilization. Today, Mapuche people and allies of the Mapuche National Liberation struggle gathered at Plaza Camilo Catrillanca to rally for the release of Mapuche political prisoners who have been kidnapped and held by the settlement known as āchile.ā
Today has been historically celebrated as the day Christopher Columbus ādiscovered the Americas,ā but that notion is false and is yet another attempt at erasing the thousands of diverse sovereign Indigenous nations that lived throughout Abya Yala and still do today. We recognize this day as the beginning of a long-lasting european invasion that has ceased to let up.
We center the Mapuche struggle in our rejection of this colonial holiday because the Mapuche have defended their traditional homelands for over 500 years, from the attempted invasion by Tawantinsuyu to the failed Spanish Empire. Now, the Mapuche struggle against the āchileanā and āargentinianā settlements imposed on Wallmapu.
Many Mapuche people are imprisoned because the Mapuche National Liberation struggle challenges the neoliberal āchileanā and āargentinianā states and their claims to land they cannot control. This repeated incarceration is an extension of colonial pushback against Mapuche sovereignty.
Our fight against colonialism and imperialism is united with that of the Mapuche. At a crucial time when right-wing governments spread throughout Abya Yala and the āunited statesā threatens every international anti-imperialist project with intervention, we must speak out and fight back against the states occupying Indigenous nations.
As people who sit upon occupied Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Ute territories, it is imperative that we center these nations in liberation struggles, and that they have the means to free themselves from occupation. We must also center New Afrikan struggles for freedom and national liberation, as every colony throughout Abya Yala built itself from labor stolen from the New Afrikan masses.
