Unleaded Fuel Now Available at Boulder Municipal Airport
The first shipment of 1,800 gallons of Unleaded UL94 aviation gasoline will arrive at Boulder Municipal Airport on July 1.
Journeys Aviation, the airport’s fixed-base operator, is now offering UL94 aviation gasoline well ahead of the FAA’s 2030 deadline for transitioning away from leaded aviation fuel.
The Colorado Department of Transportation Division of Aeronautics is providing a subsidy, through a grant to the City of Boulder, that allows UL94 to be sold at the same price as 100LL avgas. This removes one of the biggest financial barriers to adoption and makes it easier for pilots and aircraft operators to make the switch.
The change is expected to have an immediate impact. Journeys Aviation will be able to use unleaded fuel for approximately 90% of its flight-training fleet. Mile High Gliding and the Soaring Society have also committed to using unleaded fuel in their tow planes.
Although claims about lead impacts from aviation near Boulder Airport have long been debated, airport users agree on the path forward: move to unleaded fuel as quickly as possible. The arrival of UL94 is a major step in that direction and demonstrates that the Boulder aviation community is actively reducing leaded-fuel use ahead of schedule.
