Service Dogs for Kids Project - Kiwanis Club of the Foothills

Service Dogs for Kids Project - Kiwanis Club of the Foothills Our Project provides Medical Alert Service Dog training to families of children with special needs, Our club acquires puppies at the age of seven weeks.

We raise and train medical alert service dogs for children with a "silent disability" such as diabetes or severe allergies and we provide them to selected recipients at no cost, within the Boulder/Denver area. Since these dogs will spend much of their lives in public, early training emphasizes obedience and the socialization skills required for public access. Puppy raisers include the puppies in

all of their daily activities, and regular group training sessions are conducted in public places such as shopping malls, public libraries, recreation centers, etc. When the dogs are approximately 18 months of age, the final 6 months of training begins, which is customized to their child's specific needs. The dog is presented to the child at a public graduation ceremony where sponsors are recognized.
