Engineers Without Borders-USA began in 2000 by Professor Bernard Amadei with the goal of creating positive change for developing communities through the combined efforts of students, faculty, professional engineers and community members. The CU chapter was the first in the organization that has now grown to include EWB-USA and has 206 chapters and 130+ projects in 34 countries, with 4000+ members.

This summer the EWB CU Puerto Rico team traveled to Mulas, Puerto Rico to meet the community and gather useful GPS and system data. The data gathered will inform our design team of the upcoming obstacles as we work to create a better and more easily accessible water distribution system for Mulas. In the summer of 2020, our hard work and countless hours will have a significant pay off as we work with the community to implement our design.

This summer, the EWB CU Guatemala Team traveled to the town of Caserio Totolya to revamp their water conduction line. This line brings clean water to the community of about 300 people from a spring 3 kilometers away. The line frequently breaks due to rockfalls and landslides in the area. This summer, we replaced 800 meters of fragile PVC with much stronger HDPE pipe and built three new aerial crossings where the conduction line crosses over large ravines. The community members are incredibly resourceful, hardworking, and resilient and being able to work directly with them to implement and problem solve was the highlight of our time in Guatemala. This project will continue with a second implementation trip in January 2020, focusing on the automation of a pumping system within Caserio Totolya.

EWB-CU Rwanda focuses on providing safe, reliable access to drinking water in rural Rwandan communities through the implementation of rainwater catchment systems. This summer, our team focused on the assessment of future systems, as well as monitoring and evaluation of systems built in the past few years. There was a strong emphasis on communication with community members and village chiefs to determine ways to maximize the effectiveness of our projects, which included surveys, meetings, discussions, and system analysis. A high level of need was confirmed in the village of Gasiza where we plan to implement a new system next summer, as community members who live here are currently up to five hours per day to collect their water from a nearby lake. The site for this new rainwater catchment system was surveyed, and material options were explored so that design and implementation this coming Summer 2020 runs smoothly and effectively.

This summer the EWB CU Nepal Team worked with partner communities and local NGO the Namsaling Community Development Center to monitor our past implementations including a water distribution system, tap stands, and spring source protection projects. Our team also spent time conducting an informal assessment in the Hattitar community in eastern Nepal including ground surveying, meeting with the community, and water quality testing. In Hattitar, the local water users committee has recently constructed a reservoir tank and requested our partnership in designing and completing their water distribution system to increase water access to the general community, including 19 households, the community health post, and local school. Thank you to all of the people involved in supporting our work!

We are grateful that our Rwanda team is working hard to combat the very serious issue of not having access to clean drinking water.

Today the team was able to travel down to lake burera to see an area where community members used to fetch water. Not only was it a rough and far journey (upwards of 15km), but the water was highly contaminated near the shore.

To combat this, they would have someone boat to the center of the lake to gather the cleaner water at a steeper price.

If you knew how to swim, you could be hired to go and collect the water for people.

"I, myself, will never choose to swim, because I have seen too many people die out there collecting it." --Hasan

Water is life. Never take for granted the blessing clean water brings.

The EWB-CU 5k Race for Water was a big success! We raised over $1000 to help our teams continue providing access to clean water to communities around the world. Thanks so much to everyone who helped make this event possible by running, donating, or volunteering!
