We are thrilled to share that the Flatirons Chamber Music Festival: Crossing the Divide and Scott Lee have been named recipients of the 2024 Barlow Endowment for Music Composition grant!

We can’t wait to feature “Strata,” a string sextet in our 2025 FCMF Season. Just to give you a small sneak peak

“The geologic layers of sediment in Colorado’s landscape serve as a poignant metaphor for societal divisions. Just as these layers remain distinct yet part of a unified whole, Strata will emphasize the idea that our societal separations are artificial and unnecessary. Through its musical narrative, the piece will advocate for a more integrated and empathetic human experience.”

Boston native Benjamin Park first started composing music in high school, but it was not until arriving at MIT that Ben started studying and writing music more seriously.  After declaring his physics major, Ben added a second degree in music. While at MIT, he studied composition with Peter Child and played horn in the MIT Wind Ensemble. In recognition of his contributions to the MIT Music Department he was awarded the Gregory Tucker Memorial Award in 2009.
Following his passion for music, Ben enrolled at the Hartt School, ultimately earning his master’s degree and artist diploma. At Hartt, Ben studied with Robert Carl and David Macbride and performed with Capitol Winds. Ben also took part in collaborations with the Theatre and Dance Divisions and also had multiple works commissioned by the school’s new music ensemble, one of which—a violin concerto, Huldufólk—was played in Reykjavik, Iceland, as part of the Dark Music Days Festival in 2015.
From 2014 to 2019 Ben completed his doctorate in music composition with a minor in music theory at the New England Conservatory, where he studied with Kati Agócs and graduated with the Donald Martino Award for Excellence in Composition. The Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP) premiered his Dwarf Planets, an epilogue of sorts to the more famous Holst suite, and Ben also served as the Collage New Music Fellow in 2018-2019. After teaching a variety of theory and composition courses at Boston College, MIT, and NEC, Ben now works as a software engineer at Markforged, a 3D-printing company based just outside of Boston.
