Growing Gardens Growing Gardens raises awareness and provides opportunities for people to participate in urban agricultural programs. https://linktr.ee/growinggardensboulder

Growing Gardens is a Boulder-based non-profit organization established in 1998. Growing Gardens mission is to enrich the lives of our community through sustainable urban agriculture. Growing Gardens envisions people experiencing a direct and deep connection with plants, the land and each other. Through its many gardening-based programs, Growing Gardens strives to reach gardeners and would-be garde

ners of all ages to work alongside the organization and build community through urban agriculture. Urban agriculture is the practice of cultivating and caretaking of the land, processing and distributing food in, or around, a village, town or city.[1] Urban agriculture in addition can also involve animal husbandry, aquaculture, agro-forestry and horticulture. These activities also occur in peri-urban areas as well.[2]

Urban farming is generally practiced for income-earning or food-producing activities, though in some communities the main impetus is recreation and relaxation.[3] Urban agriculture contributes to food security and food safety in two ways: first, it increases the amount of food available to people living in cities, and, second, it allows fresh vegetables and fruits and meat products to be made available to urban consumers. A common and efficient form of urban agriculture is the biointensive method. Because urban agriculture promotes energy-saving local food production, caretaking of the land, urban and peri-urban agriculture are generally seen as sustainable agriculture. Why Urban Agriculture? The recognition of environmental degradation within cities through the relocation of resources to serve urban populations has inspired the implementation of different schemes of urban agriculture across the developed and developing world. From historic models such as Machu Picchu to designs for new productive city farms, the idea of locating agriculture in or around the city takes on many characteristics.

Happy snow day! What better time to start planning for sunny days ahead in your garden.

Join us this Saturday and Sunday (and next) from 8am - 4pm at 1630 Hawthorn Avenue (May 9, 10, 16 & 17) for our 26th Annual Plant Sale! The greenhouses are fully stocked, and we’re ready to welcome you to the farm to help you find the best plants for your garden.

We know water is on everyone’s mind this year. Even in a drought, growing food matters! It supports local food systems, reduces packaging and transportation impacts, and creates habitat for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. Here are a few tips for gardening using less water:
1. Consider using drip irrigation
2. Water before 10am & after 6pm
3. Add 2-4” of mulch
4. Choose drought-tolerant plants (we have them!)

We look forward to seeing you!

Join us for the first weekend of our Community Plant Sale tomorrow and Sunday from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm at our Boulder Farm (1630 Hawthorn Ave)! We will have over 100 varieties of organically grown herb and vegetable starts, including 40 varieties of our famous heirloom and hybrid tomatoes, annual flowers, perennial flowers, native and water-wise plants, fruits and berries, shrubs, vines, roses, grasses, and more! For every 2 seedlings sold, we donate 1 to our Food Project Program, which works to increase access to fresh food, gardening supplies, and education to our community.

We know that with drought conditions likely in Colorado this year, it can be hard to know what to expect for your garden. Choosing drought-friendly plants and using simple practices like watering deeply, but less often, adding mulch, and using drip irrigation can keep your garden healthy while conserving water.

We also accept SNAP payments, which apply to veggie seedling and seed packet purchases. Learn more about the SNAP Produce Bonus Program using the link in our bio.
