“There’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. Yeah. I think it’s called Puerto Rico.”…

As a justice worker leading a for the last 20 years in , I have been inspired by this country’s civil rights journey and by the legacy of public service and volunteerism. Yes, I have also been often discouraged by the systemic roadblocks to equity a history of racism has put in place.

Yet, no struggle has made me burst into tears as I did when I heard this hate speech come out of Trump’s rally yesterday at Madison Square Garden

Colegas, this is not a partisan matter. This is an unprecedented, hate, bias, and bully driven human frequency coming from a presidential election I don’t believe we have ever seen in our lifetime. Please, speak up against this dismantling of the foundational inclusive values that this country once stood for.

“By the time former President Donald J. Trump took the stage at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, a parade of speakers had already spent hours disparaging Latinos, Black people, Palestinians and Jews; directing misogynistic comments at Vice President Kamala Harris; and echoing language used by the Ku Klux Klan.”

A range of speakers at Madison Square Garden on Sunday disparaged Latinos, Black people, Palestinians and Jews, and made vulgar references to Kamala Harris. The Trump campaign has distanced itself from only one of these statements.

The one day agenda is packed to an almost unreasonable degree, yet it seems to require that, this gathering: an overcrowded table bursting with good will for an urgent call. Climate Change is here and nature based solutions are the pathways for economies and communities to thrive in the face of adversities. The health services of nature-and the arts-have for too long been ignored by our governments and our social systems. The last decade has generated irrefutable data quantifying the loss of life and of revenues that comes from this ignorance. The unprecedented 1 billion in Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) just released to support urban forestry is momentous and a blessing. We want to believe the next five years are not going to replicate systemic inequities but are instead bound to bring us together in ways we have not come together in recent times. This fills us with hope. Wed are grateful for our wonderful sponsors: Denver Climate Action, Sustainability and Resiliency City and County of Denver Government Denver Arts & Venues and its leader Tariana Navas-Nieves The Colorado Health Foundation Colorado Sierra Club REI Colorado Parks and Wildlife and we must thank Latino Community Foundation of Colorado and its leader Carlos Martinez as well as to Arbor Day Foundation EJ program for its recent overall capacity support that has been instrumental in uplifting our spirits to grow our grassroots justice work!
