We proudly invest in locally led programs in Petit Trou de Nippes, our partner community of 36 years, through education, health, agriculture, and girls' empowerment. Locally Haiti’s integrated initiatives are designed to support economic development and the overall health and well-being of families in the Nippes region of rural Haiti. Locally Haiti was founded in 1989 under the name the Colorado Haiti Project by three Episcopal priests — Haitian Priest and Community Organizer, Father Octave LaFontant, and Fathers Dayle Casey and Ed Morgan of Colorado. The Episcopal Church remains a foundational and fundamental partner in our work, both in the U.S.

Five years ago today, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the south of Haiti devastating infrastructure and taking over 2,000 lives.

Our local partners, Asosiyasyon Asfpn Nip and St. Paul’s School responded heroically, and we were proud to support their relief efforts in the immediate aftermath. The earthquake also irreparably damaged the state-run clinic in Petit Trou de Nippes. Thanks to generous support from Direct Relief, Episcopal Relief & Development, and from our supporters across the country, Locally Haiti funded the design and build of a new community hospital that has truly changed what is possible for healthcare in Petit Trou.

Today we pause to mourn the losses suffered, to celebrate the progress made since, and to renew our commitment to investing in the local leaders keeping Petit Trou de Nippes strong from the inside out.

Students from seven local schools recently came together for an exciting week-long chess tournament hosted by Asosiyasyon Asfpn Nip at Lise Technical High School. Throughout the competition, participants demonstrated impressive skill, critical thinking, perseverance, and teamwork as they challenged one another across the chessboard.

Congratulations to the St. Paul’s School team, which earned first place, and the Lise Technical High School team, which secured second place after a strong performance throughout the tournament! 🏆

This event showcased not only the students’ talent and dedication, but also the power of chess to build confidence, strengthen problem-solving skills, and foster connections among young people from across the community.

A heartfelt thank you to ASFPN, the participating schools, teachers, organizers, and supporters who helped make this tournament possible. We are proud of every student who participated and look forward to seeing the continued growth of chess in Petit Trou.

A sustainable investment in nutrition, income, and community growth. 🐐

This week, Locally Haiti distributed 40 goats to 20 families across Petit Trou. The families were selected through local community organizations, with a focus on those facing the greatest economic challenges.

The project was developed in response to a community survey conducted last year, which identified access to protein as a significant concern for many families. By providing each family with two goats, we are helping create a long-term source of both nutrition and income.

As the goats reproduce, each participating family will return two baby goats to the program. Those goats will then be distributed to additional families, allowing the project to grow and reach more households over time.

Families can build wealth by growing their herds, sell goats to generate income, and improve access to fresh meat for their households and communities. What begins with 40 goats today has the potential to benefit many more families in the years ahead.

We extend our gratitude to Agronomists Pierrette, Yves, and Schneider for their leadership, expertise, and hands-on support in making this project possible. Their dedication to strengthening livelihoods and food security in the community has been instrumental to the success of this initiative.

We are also grateful to our local partners and the participating families whose commitment will help this project grow and benefit many more households in the future. ❤️🇭🇹

♟️ Happy World Chess Day!

Today, we’re celebrating the power of strategic thinking, community, and the incredible young leaders making moves in Haiti.

Meet Dupiche, a chess club coach for our youth league in Petit Trou de Nippes. Through a partnership between and , and with leadership from , local coaches are empowering a new generation of Haitian students—many of whom had never touched a chessboard before—to think critically, plan ahead, and build confidence both on and off the board.

Earlier this month, 14 students from our Scholarship Program spent the day exploring one of southern Haiti’s most unique cultural and historical landmarks: the famous 500 Steps of Aux Coteaux. 🇭🇹

After sharing breakfast together, the students traveled to the site, where they learned about its history, religious significance, and role as an important tourist destination in the region. Built in 2000, the 500 Steps lead to a mountaintop sanctuary overlooking the town of Aux Coteaux, the coastline, and the Caribbean Sea beyond.

When the students reached the top, they took time to rest, reflect, and enjoy the view.The outing was a great success, providing not only a fun and memorable experience, but also an opportunity for meaningful conversation, engagement, and relationship-building amongst the students.

Experiences like these help students build community, explore their country’s rich cultural heritage, and create memories that extend far beyond the classroom. 💙

📚 Best of luck to the 18 graduating students from St. Paul’s School as they begin their national exams this week!

These exams, which run through Thursday, are the last step in graduating from high school, a major milestone for our students. Before the exams began, Fr. Daniel gathered with the students to offer words of encouragement and a prayer for confidence, wisdom, and success.

🌱 Proud to partner with the agriculture students of Art Borin Professional School!

Thanks to the leadership of Agro Yves, these students are gaining hands-on experience by working alongside our staff and partners in the Petit Trou Community Hospital garden.

This week, students spent time in the nursery and planted hot peppers and eggplants across two garden plots. 🌶️🍆

Agro Yves shared:

"For the students, this partnership is an experience that puts them in direct contact with the reality of what they’re studying—which is a fundamental part of learning and growth. It allows them to discover new plants and techniques as well. For the garden program, it’s an opportunity to share knowledge and successes while also helping our work advance more quickly."

By connecting classroom learning with real-world experience, these students are building skills that will strengthen their futures—and help cultivate a more food-secure Haiti. 💚
