We believe in Haitian leadership and Haitian vision, investing in locally led programs and community-based work. and in Haiti.

We proudly invest in locally led programs in Petit Trou de Nippes, our partner community of 36 years, through education, health, agriculture, and girls' empowerment. Locally Haiti’s integrated initiatives are designed to support economic development and the overall health and well-being of families in the Nippes region of rural Haiti. Locally Haiti supports efforts in education, agriculture and conservation, community health, and girls' empowerment. Locally Haiti was founded in 1989 under the name the Colorado Haiti Project by three Episcopal priests — Haitian Priest and Community Organizer, Father Octave LaFontant, and Fathers Dayle Casey and Ed Morgan of Colorado. The Episcopal Church remains a foundational and fundamental partner in our work, both in the U.S.

🌱 Today is Hunger Action Day. 🌱

Hunger remains a challenge for families in Petit Trou, but we also see community leaders working toward solutions every day. 💚

Through Locally Haiti’s agriculture programs, local agronomists, farmers, and students are helping fight hunger and strengthen food systems. From hospital food gardens 🥬 and fruit tree planting 🌳 to goat-sharing initiatives 🐐 and dairy production (coming soon!) 🥛, these efforts are increasing access to nutritious food while building on local knowledge and leadership.

Today, we celebrate and thank the agronomists, farmers, agriculture students, and community leaders who are working to create a healthier future for their neighbors. And thank you to all of our supporters who help make this work possible.

The goat project is about more than providing livestock—it’s also about sharing knowledge and building skills.

Recently, goat program participants joined agriculture students from Art Borin Professional School in Anse-a-Veau for hands-on training on how to make bloc à nicher, or nutritional blocks for goats.

Made from ingredients such as salt, cane syrup, wheat bran, and other locally available materials, these blocks provide important vitamins and minerals that may be missing from a goat’s daily diet. They also encourage goats to drink more water, helping them stay healthy and strong.

The training gave both students and goat program participants the opportunity to learn together, understand each step of the process, and gain practical knowledge they can apply at home.

We’re grateful to our local partners and educators, (Agro Pierrette Decime, Agro Schneider Chancy, Haitian Sports Foundation (HSF) Art Borin school) who continue to create opportunities for learning, collaboration, and stronger livelihoods in Petit Trou. 🐐🌱

“I write from Haiti. The same Haiti currently subject to the U.S. State Department’s Level 4 Travel Advisory encouraging Americans to leave a DNA sample with their doctor and dental records with their family “in case it is necessary…to identify your remains.”

And yet.

Here in a small coastal city in the south of Haiti, there is beauty everywhere. Beauty in the laughter of teens hunched over chess boards. Beauty in the way the mayor beeps and waves to everyone he passes. Beauty in the hopeful smile of the expecting mother who trekked miles to arrive at the hospital for a prenatal visit.”

Great to spend World Humanitarian Day with our partners at Direct Relief and Hope for Haiti !

Thank you, Skyler Badenoch and Dan Hovey, for making the trip and for your continued partnership and support. Our team in Haiti was thrilled to spend time with you, share updates, and celebrate the power of collaboration in strengthening communities.

Five years ago today, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the south of Haiti devastating infrastructure and taking over 2,000 lives.

Our local partners, Asosiyasyon Asfpn Nip and St. Paul’s School responded heroically, and we were proud to support their relief efforts in the immediate aftermath. The earthquake also irreparably damaged the state-run clinic in Petit Trou de Nippes. Thanks to generous support from Direct Relief, Episcopal Relief & Development, and from our supporters across the country, Locally Haiti funded the design and build of a new community hospital that has truly changed what is possible for healthcare in Petit Trou.

Today we pause to mourn the losses suffered, to celebrate the progress made since, and to renew our commitment to investing in the local leaders keeping Petit Trou de Nippes strong from the inside out.

Students from seven local schools recently came together for an exciting week-long chess tournament hosted by Asosiyasyon Asfpn Nip at Lise Technical High School. Throughout the competition, participants demonstrated impressive skill, critical thinking, perseverance, and teamwork as they challenged one another across the chessboard.

Congratulations to the St. Paul’s School team, which earned first place, and the Lise Technical High School team, which secured second place after a strong performance throughout the tournament! 🏆

This event showcased not only the students’ talent and dedication, but also the power of chess to build confidence, strengthen problem-solving skills, and foster connections among young people from across the community.

A heartfelt thank you to ASFPN, the participating schools, teachers, organizers, and supporters who helped make this tournament possible. We are proud of every student who participated and look forward to seeing the continued growth of chess in Petit Trou.
