in 2019, the kilogram was officially redefined. Scientists from national measurement institutes across the world voted to base the measurement on fundamental constants of nature rather than on the original, physical kilogram, stored in a vault in Paris. James Prescott Joule FRS was born in 1818. The Salford-born mathematician, physicist and brewer worked to understand heat. His work is crucial to the 1st law of thermodynamics. The SI unit for for energy is named in his honour.

Swedish astronomer and physicist Anders Celsius was born in 1701. He is best known for his system of temperature measurement, though originally 0 represented the boiling point of water, and 100 represented the freezing point. This decorative thermometer is from an early account of meteorological instruments from 1688.
