Boulder Chorale

Boulder Chorale The Boulder Chorale is proud to be Boulder's oldest and largest community choral organization.

We collaborate with other regional ensembles including the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra, the Colorado MahlerFest, the Longmont, Jefferson and Boulder Symphony Orchestras, Denver’s Mercury Ensemble, Kutandara Marimba, and the Colorado Hebrew Chorale. Acclaimed performances from recent seasons featured Orff’s Carmina Burana, Mahler’s Das klagende Lied, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Bach’s Magnificat

, and the Requiems of Duruflé, Mozart, Verdi and Fauré. The Chorale each season also presents concerts of smaller and intriguing works, including new music of living composers and unaccompanied choral gems from the 16th to 21st centuries. While deeply rooted in our community, the Boulder Chorale also enjoys a tradition of international touring. Since 2001 we have embarked on concert tours to the People’s Republic of China, Italy, Austria, Greece, and Costa Rica. In June 2013, the Chorale will be touring the Czech Republic and Poland. As part of our commitment to outreach and education, the Boulder Chorale sponsors several initiatives. Complimentary Tickets and Tickets for Children programs strive to increase the accessibility of our concerts. The Young Artists Vocal Competition and the High School Choristers Program expand our commitment to music education in the community. The Boulder Chorale invites all interested singers to join us, and welcomes new members each season.

(ad) MahlerFest is more than the great music of Gustav Mahler. MahlerFest 39, May 13-17, explores how artists from Bach and Beethoven to Edward Elgar and Pete Townshend transformed personal crises into turning points in music history. The season opens with The Who’s Tommy, performed live by Artistic Director Kenneth Woods and his band “Who’s Mahler."

The festival includes a variety of events, many of them free and open the public, including open rehearsals, a film and a play about Mahler’s time in New York, a guided hike, & more.

On Saturday, May 16, over 200 musicians will perform Beethoven’s famous Symphony No 9 with its Ode to Joy theme but with a twist as they’ll be using Mahler’s version of the score where he made adjustments for modern instruments performing in modern halls.

Brinton Smith, Principal cellist of the Houston Symphony, will perform Elgar’s Cello Concerto, a fan favorite, before the season closes with Mahler’s Ninth Symphony.

Mahler and Elgar were not just composers. They were both among the greatest conductors of their, or any, generation. Their deep experience on the podium, engaging on an intense creative level with the great works of the past, had a profound impact on their composition. Mahler's "touch-ups" of Beethoven's final symphony show Mahler's determination that his use of the orchestra be not just an end in itself, but a servant of meaning and logic of the score, while Elgar's Bach transcription represents something much more radical - a melding of two great creative minds. Elgar's own genius as an orchestrator may have even surpassed that of Mahler, all the more remarkable since he was completely self-taught - just as Steve Elcock was, whose 11th Symphony receives its world premiere on this thrilling and revelatory program.
