This fall, Ethan is gearing up for his senior year studying aerospace engineering at the University of Colorado. He loves planes and spacecraft, and is working toward his first pilot’s license.

Ethan stumbled across Bread+Belonging at the beginning of last year when he was looking for a community to connect with on campus. The simple invitation to gather, share a meal, and be in conversation with other students seemed like just the right group for him. The demands of school are often high, and Ethan was looking for a community where he could relax and recharge.

He found that community at Bread+Belonging Tuesday night dinners, especially the warm welcome he felt from the first time he came. “There is the feeling in the air,” he smiles and says, “[that] people want you to be there.” Gathering with the Bread+Belonging community each week has given Ethan the space to recharge that he was looking for. “I just feel more relaxed and more connected with myself going to school,” he reflects. “Having the release of coming and talking and having a good time makes it easier for me to face all the stress that comes with the school year. I was honestly surprised just how much more I felt centered, just because I had the space to breathe.”

Over the course of the year, Ethan’s conversations at Bread+Belonging deepened. “Lent,” he shares, “was a very important time for me to feel like I was building my relationship with God.” Themes from the Ash Wednesday service with the St. Aidan’s community fueled conversations for him around Bread+Belonging dinner tables. Ethan is grateful for the opportunity to reflect with others on big questions like, “Who am I right now? What do I want to see for myself? What do I want to make this season [Lent] into for myself?”

We are grateful for your support for the Bread+Belonging community where students like Ethan can grow more connected and grounded in their relationships on campus and with their faith. Thank you for being part of sustaining a sanctuary for all CU students.

John (‘22 & ‘25) arrived at the CU Boulder in fall 2018, studying electrical engineering and music performance, and continued on for a Masters in Creative Technology and Design. John has been involved in many activities on campus, including fencing, electrical engineering clubs, and improv comedy, as well as various music groups.

When the Covid pandemic shut down the country, he decided to remain on campus. “It was a good call for me,” he said, “but it was tough.” Coming out of the Covid bubble, John found that it had changed how he interacted with people. “I think, for everyone, not just me, the way we talked to everyone was different,” he explained. “I felt that, for some reason, there was some barrier between me and a new person. How did I start a conversation with them? Was I being a nuisance?” When he started coming to Bread+Belonging Tuesday dinners, he found an opportunity simply to talk to other people and just get to know them. Those conversations began to break down that barrier he had been feeling. “I particularly enjoyed the eclecticness of the people there–anyone could come, and it drew a lot of unique people and unique perspectives. There were people who were students, people who were curious about faith, people who were just there for food,” John said. “It made for honest and fun conversations, and created more moments for the natural human connection to happen. There are fewer and fewer opportunities to find those kinds of spaces in the world.”

Now newly married and working and living in the Boulder area, John points out that Bread+Belonging has given him a model for building community. “For me,” he reflects, “it’s given me an example of gathering people, and what that can look like, and what it feels like to have a community of people who are open. I want to build that kind of community for myself. B+B was a good model for that and also a good model of leadership for what it takes to bring people together just to be together.”

Most Tuesdays you can find Amy in the Bread+Belonging kitchen before dinner. She is a warm and bubbly presence, joyfully helping chop veggies, checking up on everyone’s day, or welcoming other students who arrive early to dinner. Amy loves anime, manga, and all things creative and crafty. She came to CU Boulder to study neuroscience and stay close to her family, but a challenging first year raised a lot of big questions and led her to move to a major in business.

As a commuter student who lives thirty minutes away, Amy struggled to make friends and feel connected on campus. “Before I came to Bread+Belonging, school was just a building; it was just a place where I learned, and then I left,” Amy recalls, “I did not want to stay.” She tried joining a sorority, and, though it wasn’t the right fit for her, fulfilling the sorority’s volunteer requirement introduced her to Bread+Belonging. Because she often feels shy with new people, working alongside other students in the kitchen helped her slowly warm up to people, make friends, and feel more at home in the community. Now, she comes early to St. Aidan’s most Tuesdays after class and is a regular part of the B+B kitchen team.

At Bread+Belonging, Amy discovered the caring, consistent community she was looking for. “I found a place I belong,” she shares joyfully, “It just feels really good to have a place where people know my name and like me, and they miss me when I’m gone, and I miss them when they're gone!” She’s built strong friendships that extend beyond Bread+Belonging, and she is grateful for friends who introduce her to new things she might not otherwise have tried, like going to the campus gym. Because of Bread+Belonging, college isn’t just a place to learn and then leave anymore for Amy. It’s become a place of connection, friendship, and authentic community.

Dear Friends of Bread+Belonging,

Your support for Bread+Belonging is making an impact on campus, helping us sustain a sanctuary where students in Boulder can explore faith and vocation within a caring and supportive community. As we celebrate another successful year of ministry, we are grateful for you and the many ways you make a difference in the lives of students like Josh.

Josh loves building things, learning, and all things that fly. Together, these led him to study aerospace engineering and applied math, and to serving as a team lead for the University of Colorado Sounding Rocket Lab, a competitive student rocketry group. Their next goal? Designing a vehicle they can launch into space!

Josh grew up in a Lutheran congregation where he experienced a very welcoming and loving way of being the church. But amidst the rigorous demands of academic work it was hard to find time to connect with God. This year, Josh was looking for a faith community in Boulder, and found Bread+Belonging. “It’s been a really great time for me personally to connect with God during the week,” Josh reflects. “It’s a change for me to step back and see the bigger picture, to look at this community, to look at how God has brought these people together.” Tuesday nights have become a refuge for Josh, time to decompress and connect with people outside the aerospace program.

Bread+Belonging has also given Josh a place to connect his love of building things with his faith. At B+B’s service day with the local Habitat for Humanity chapter this spring, he loved teaching other students about tools and imagining those who will live in the homes we worked on. “There’s just something sacred about building a home where you make memories with the people you love,” Josh says. “Even to have a small part in providing something like that for someone else is really, really special.”

In between classes and Bread+Belonging gatherings, Kylie (‘26) is often at the university’s map library where they work several shifts each week. They first got into maps in a geography course, and love how maps tell complex stories about places and people.

Kylie grew up what they describe as “vaguely Christian,” but by the time they came to college, they were pretty uninterested in faith. Kylie first came to Bread+Belonging during their first year in part because they wanted a break from dining hall food. But they also came because they were “so tired of being deeply resentful of church,” Kylie remembers, “and I just wanted to give it a chance.”

A spring break trip to Holden Village and conversations in small group programs invited Kylie to experience faith community in new ways. A Q***r Catechism group was “the first religious experience where I was allowed to ask challenging questions,” Kylie recalls. “It was awesome! I got to learn things. That was really huge for me.” Bread+Belonging also offered meaningful connections to the intergenerational side of church life. During their time in Boulder, Kylie has worshiped with St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church as well as Trinity Lutheran Church, and has become a big champion of B+B’s annual intergenerational Mardi Gras celebration. This wider community offered Kylie valuable support during a particularly challenging summer. “People were very obviously looking out for me,” Kylie remembers, “and that was really helpful in such a stressful time.”

As Kylie graduates this spring, they are getting ready to start a new chapter on the east coast with close friends they met at Bread+Belonging. They know that seeking out intentional community will be a high priority in their new home. Reflecting on what they are most grateful for during their time with B+B, it comes down to “the love,” KyIie says,” I just felt loved, and like people care. And gosh, that’s priceless, honestly!”
