Back to school season is here!

At Olanakwe Community Fund we are happy to help Hadzabe hunter-gatherer children get the school supplies that they need to be successful! It's a community initiative to send children to school - where they can learn to read and write. The community also values teaching children to hunt and gather, learning their traditional food economy. But without literacy and basic arithmetic, they are not empowered to join the conversation on gaining better land rights, increasing access to medical care, or informing policies impacting their homeland.

Please consider helping us raise funds so that every child has the supplies to be successful as they return to school! Visit https://www.olanakwe.org/ to make a donation.

It’s in the United States and we are asking our followers to continue giving and supporting to our mutual-aid. Olanakwe is managed and run-by the Hadzabe community members, and their goals are centered on raising appropriate funding for their children (the Olanakwe) to attend school, a mandatory requirement in Tanzania.

Right now, Yeada Chini needs our assistance. It’s one of the main schools that Hadzabe children attend, it was built in the 1960s and hasn’t been upgraded since. In general, the school desperately needs upgrades to function properly and safely.

We are continuing our fundraising efforts to establish solar panels throughout the school to assist with lights and a generator. Currently, the school utilities coal-powered lanterns for lighting and to use in the kitchen. The kitchen is also being upgraded, and the community has stepped in to try and complete kitchen construction by hand so the children can prepare food.

The dormitories need upgrades as well. Children must have safe, comfortable, and clean sleeping mattresses to help foster a good environment for learning. Hadzabe children want to attend school and be successful in all of their endeavors, but it first begins with a healthy school.

Please help us raise money for our Olanakwe this and help raise funds to improve Yaeda Chini School in Northern Tanzania!

Our Co-Founder and Director, Shani Mangola (far right in photo), is finishing up his first year in Tanzanian law school - he is working towards becoming a human rights attorney to work on behalf of the Hadzabe community.

Exams are this week - and then he is off to his clerkship in Karatu. Hongera (congratulations), Shani! We wish you the best of luck in your studies!

Hadzabe people often do not have a seat at the table when it comes to decision making in regard to land rights and the future. Many young people want to maintain their cultural identity & traditions AND learn to read, write, and speak the languages of the government leaders.

Indigenous hunter-gatherers cannot maintain land rights without education and the ability to fight for their rights in the spaces where decisions are being made.

Educational sovereignty matters. It takes $1000 to put one child through one year of high school. This is a long haul - and takes a whole word of support for one Indigenous hunter-gatherer child to graduate.

Please meet the bright stars we are trying so hard to support. From left to right: Ruth, Mambos, Magandula, and Charles. They and their parents have approved these photos and asked us to post them in the hopes that we can raise funds for these hard working future leaders of Hadzabe society.

Please consider donating to support their education. Every dollar counts! We have to raise $4000 by January or they cannot attend secondary school.

Classroom renovations at the Endamagha Primary School are finally complete! See before and after photos below.

We raised money for six months and finally reached our goal - allowing us to repair two classrooms. We removed asbestos, replaced windows, weather proofed doors & walls, and ordered all new desks and storage cabinets.

Thank you so very much to our donors. Nube'eya! We could not have done this without your support. The children are now learning in a safe classroom and thrilled about their new space.

Today is a good day. ✨✨✨

We typically post all of our good news here so that our friends and supporters can see how their donations are being put to use. This is not good news. This is reality - and serves as a reminder.

There is a lot of relief and happiness on social media feeds about "getting back to normal" ... but the pandemic is far from over. We are all tired of it. Yet, it persists. Many countries do not yet have a single vaccine - and some countries have neither the means nor the intention of obtaining any vaccines for their people. This includes Tanzania, which is in the middle of another wave of coronavirus.

Right now several of our community members and team members are sick with COVID or recovering. We are currently fundraising to pay for transport and medical bills so that they can get back to work. We are still here - and will have more good news to share once we can get back to work safely.

Soccer is so important. Like all sports, it fosters inclusion and is fundamentally about participation. The most basic element of sport is people coming together to play. This is an extremely powerful tool and one that supports social inclusion - long after the match is over.

Social inclusion is the process of improving how individuals and groups take part in society. At the Endamagha Primary School in Mang'ola village in Northern Tanzania, children from many different ethnic groups - with different home languages, religions, and customs - are brought together in boarding school. They face barriers that are hard to overcome - but soccer can turn those barriers into bridges.

Soccer is a HUGE sport in Tanzania. It is beloved. And when the kids can play together, it helps them negotiate friendships and encourages a better connection to those around them.

The school has been in need of basic supplies and room repairs - which are in progress. Often the very pressing need for these items overshadows the requests to donors for things like sports equipment. But sport is a facilitator of integration and communication - and providing soccer balls and nets is just as important to wellbeing and community building as pencils and paper.

Through generous donations, the Endamagha Primary School just received their first influx of soccer supplies. Now, for the first time, children from marginalized Indigenous communities who all attend the same school will have uniforms and equipment to participate in matches - at the school and regionally. This is about so much more than soccer. We are working hard to make sure that all of these children can keep playing - so that they can succeed on and off the field.

The Tanzanian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT) invited members of the Hadzabe community to join a meeting discussing a projected World Bank initiative to advance digital connectivity (much needed cell towers and internet access) to historically underserved rural areas of the country.

The TZ Director of Olanakwe Community Fund, Shani Msafir Sigwazi, was one of the attendees. He was representing his community and , as World Bank wants to hear from the Indigenous communities potentially impacted - and how more connectivity can be beneficial. Lots of work to do - and lots of discussion to come. Hadzabe voices were at the table for the first time. It's a good day.
