🌱 We’re Hiring! 🌱

Join BFFC and help transform vacant lots into community-owned, ecologically healthy food forest parks.

Our parks grow free food, increase biodiversity, provide gathering spaces for neighbors, and give residents direct access to nature in neighborhoods disproportionately impacted by disinvestment.

Be part of a small team that's dedicated to helping Boston become greener, healthier, and more equitable. 💚

A snowy MLK Day across the food forests. Quiet, calm, bright. A day to reflect on where we’ve been, where we’re going, and those who lead us there.

🌿 What's the difference between a land trust site and a coalition site? 🌿

Land trust sites are protected in the our nonprofit community land trust (CLT), which is a legal structure that holds and protects land for community use. Our CLT’s Board of Directors is composed of community members for whom the land is being held. Thus, the land is owned by the community in perpetuity and protected from development for future generations. BFFC supports land trust stewards through educational workshops, hands-on technical assistance, maintenance support, and more.

Coalition’ sites are part of our broader network of food forest parks but not legally in our land trust. These parcels are typically owned and conserved by another organization, such the Massachusetts Audubon Society or the Trustees of Reservations, but are strengthened in their efforts by the support of other stewardship teams in the coalition. Stewards of coalition sites receive similar support from BFFC as land trust stewards, including educational workshops and personalized technical assistance in the maintenance of their land.

All stewards — whether affiliated with a land trust or coalition food forest — make up our coalition and contribute to the network of mutual aid and support that we are weaving across the food forests and across the city.

There are currently 13 food forests in the BFFC network, with several more in the works and being built this year. Stay tuned for more updates on these projects!

"Across Boston, Maine, and Indigenous communities in the Northeast, there are tremendous efforts underway that are realizing the right to food through food forests. Ultimately, when governments adopt enabling policies like clear processes and specific regulations while embracing alternative, agroecological approaches to food production, food forests have the potential to become critical public infrastructure in our communities. An equitable and resilient food future requires a balancing of community initiative and institutional support. Food forests are exemplary of how we can use all of the tools available to realize the right to food."

We're thrilled to end the year as one of several organizations addressing the right to food through food forest and agroecological work in our region by UVM's Institute for Agroecology 🌿

Food forest parks are cared for with steady, shared effort by stewardship teams, including regular meetings, workdays, and wider community gatherings. Stewards are supported by local experts and BFFC staff.

Each stewardship team has access to funds to spend throughout the year on things like new tools and equipment, replacement plants if any are lost to drought or disease, and food for community and team events.

Over the years, stewardship becomes as much about listening as it is about managing: supporting the food forests where they need it, learning from their rhythms, celebrating the harvest, and protecting the habitat it builds.

The relationship between human care and ecological resilience is why these parks thrive. They become more resilient while the community becomes closer to the land that they care for.
