Meetup Alert! Thurs 6/18 Wingnut Testing is back geeks!

Last time Peter Yost joined us we learned all about the gasketed window install method he and Cody Pelletier have been working on. Inspired by the simplicity (and effectiveness) of car door gaskets, they now have some TOP SECRET, never before seen prototypes, fresh from the factory in Europe, and ready for is Wingnuts to put them through their paces. 🔨🧪🗜️

Apparently Peter’s got a pressure washer and a kiddie pool 💦 in the back of his electric car and he’s bringing them to the Design Center…which has got to be a first. You do not want to miss this!

Making educated compromises is what door installs are all about. That was ons take away from our meetup with architect Stephanie Horowitz . She says door are so tough because they are so exposed…right at grade, no overhangs protecting the sill, hard to insulate, lots of wear and tear from foot traffic and all those details get even harder when it comes to the sleek installs people love today both for the sleek look and the accessibility.

On top of that she makes a series of decisions about how to detail them for the best energy performance and durability in ZED’s net zero and passive house projects, while also considering how units might be replaced 50+ years from now. Yet another set of pros and cons to factor in.

Stephanie shared drawings, strategies and details she has learned over 20+ years as an architect and shared two slides of do’s and don’ts to provide actionable frameworks for approaching any door install…even though the presentation was unapologetically about high-performance doors imported from Europe.

Mark Convey and Patrik Muzila from showed off the new Salamander lift and slide they donated and installed at the Barn and it really is so impressive. It looks incredible and operates effortlessly. Worth coming to our next meetup up just to open and close it a few times. Thank you to EAS for supporting the meetup and to Studio HPDC for hosting the geeks.

We talk about windows all the time… now it’s time for doors to shine.

Who better to learn from than someone who’s spent the last 20 years designing incredible high-performance and Passive House homes?

Stephanie will walk us through ZeroEnergy Design’s approach to door detailing and installation, how their process has evolved over time, and some real-world lessons learned along the way. We’ll look at details that worked, details that maybe didn’t, and what actually matters if you want your next door install to perform and last.

Plus, we have a guest star:
The brand new “Barn” door, provided by , was just installed! We’ll get an up-close look at this impressive triple-pane door and dig into the details together. I can’t wait to see it.

Well that was inspiring! Our panel discussion last week, supported by Jack Condon , was phenomenal. Thank you Stego! Those sweet v***r barrier cutters were gone in two seconds! 💨

Tagore Hernandez 📐 discussed what it takes to start a movement and the three action agents needed to make any movement gain traction and create durable change.

Advocates like 🍄‍🟫 Sara Kudra stretch the imagination. Implementors like 🔨 Evan Smith build to see what’s possible. Validators like 🧪 Mike Brown ask whether it actually works.

The roles push and pull each other forward, both antagonizing and supporting the other two along the way. It was an inspiring discussion that left us all with a better understanding of ourselves, our “why”, and the role we play in this BS* movement as well as an awareness for the perspectives of others and how we can all work together productively. Thank you to our host and panelists for sharing your experience and expertise with us all so generously!
