Massachusetts Corporate Power Reset Initiative
A Better Democracy for a Better Commonwealth
The Problem
Corporations and super PACs can spend unlimited money to influence Massachusetts elections. Many of these corporations have foreign ownership or influence. This undermines our right to self government and drowns out the voices of Massachusetts voters.
Courts have said that when corporations speak, their speech is protected, but they have never said that states must grant corporations the power to spend money on politics.
Our Solution
The Corporate Power Reset Initiative restores democratic control by limiting the powers that state law grants to corporations. Our proposal will
• Remove political spending powers from Massachusetts corporate charters
• Block foreign influenced corporations from spending money in Massachusetts elections
• Require transparency for any remaining political activity by artificial entities
• Allow political activity only through voluntary separate segregated funds
• Increase enforcement to ensure compliance and protect the integrity of elections
What This Means for Massachusetts
• People will govern again, not corporations
• Local voices will outweigh special interests
• Elections will be more fair, transparent, and responsive
• Foreign interests will no longer be able to influence our political system indirectly
• Massachusetts will lead the nation in democracy reform
Why This Can Work
Corporations have only the powers we give them. By restructuring state corporate law we cut corporate political power at its source without conflicting with federal First Amendment doctrine. This approach builds on the growing Corporate Power Reset strategy advancing in other states.
How You Can Help
We are assembling a coalition of voters, lawyers, small businesses, labor, students, and everyday residents who believe democracy belongs to people.
If you want to support this campaign or join early discussions, reach out and be part of the work to put this initiative on the twenty twenty eight ballot.
Together we can create a Commonwealth where elections reflect the voices of the people rather than the wallets of corporations.
