leadership is having the magnanimity to attribute success to the team, the humility to attribute defeat to oneself, the decency to be friendly towards everyone, the courage to doggedly pursue one’s visions, the flexibility to change one’s visions as one goes along, and the lightness of heart to laugh at oneself.

In a society where there is no longer a shared conception of the community’s good as specified by the good for man, there can no longer either be any very substantial concept of what it is to contribute more or less to the achievement of that good. Hence notions of desert and of honor become detached from the context in which they were originally at home. Honor becomes nothing more than a badge of aristocratic status, and status itself, tied as it is now so securely to property, has very little to do with desert.

The conflicts that tear society apart resemble the distinction between the concept and the particular facts subordinated to it.... Whatever refuses to abide by the unity imposed by the principle of dominion manifests itself not as something indifferent to that principle, but as an infringement of logic: as a contradiction.

The birth of responsibility and self-control happens when someone understands that there is no other time than Now. We will overcome our greatest difficulties in the present moment. Don’t cheat ourselves by receding into the past in search of an explanation or by rushing into the future in search of an illusory hope.

Each time we meet an old emotional pattern with presence, our awakening to truth can deepen. There’s less identification with the self in the story and more ability to rest in the awareness that is witnessing what’s happening. We become more able to abide in compassion, to remember and trust our true home. Rather than cycling repetitively through old conditioning, we are actually spiraling toward freedom.

Hope you had a wonderful 4th of July with families and friends. As you are probably aware, the recent breakdown of logistics and infrastructure because of the pandemic, and now, inflation, have caused a serious food insecurity problem throughout the country, particularly during these summer months. Most food banks and shelters have run out of food and most are not able to predict and ensure the ability to replenish stocks and avoid the depletion of inventories. My organization, TRS Foundation, is currently working with food suppliers, freight forwarders, and grocers around the world from the producing countries to step in to help with solving this critical challenge. We desperately need the compassion and the courage to change the conditions that support our suffering. Those conditions are things like ignorance, bitterness, negligence, clinging, and holding on.

In today’s society we are very much like birds that have lived too long in a cage to which we return even when we get the chance to fly away. We have grown so accustomed to our faults that we can barely imagine what life would be like without them. The prospect of change simply makes us dizzy.
