The Seaside Gardeners of Marshfield are a group of women with various garden projects throughout our town. One of them is the Summer Street Island on Route 3-A in Marshfield.
As the caretakers of the island, we plant, water and w**d the island in the Spring and Summer months.
There is a huge sign on the island that states,
“Welcome to Marshfield, Home of Daniel Webster.”
The old sign had deteriorated over the years and we made it our project to replace it. it turned into a labor of love for the Marshfield community (young-old and in-between) to come together and create a brand
new sign that welcomes visitors and residents to our town.
John Foster Lumber on Webster Street donated the lumber and building materials. Then the Marshfield High School
students under the direction of Tom Greland, Technology Education teacher, built a structure to house the sign. The High School Art class under the direction of
Michele Almeida, Art Teacher, meticulously stenciled and painted the lettering on the sign.
Michael Murphy an artist from the Senior Center created an image of Daniel Webster which was used for the waterproof rendition created by Steve Anstett of South Shore Signs.
In addition, John Valianti of South Shore signs provided invaluable advice on how to weatherproof the sign and assisted the High School in installing the roof of the structure.
Finally, Seone’s of Abington donated a truck load of mulch which brought all the beauty of the flowers together.
The Marshfield fair in August is a great draw for the surrounding communities to come together for fun. This sign stands out in welcoming people to the town.
Josephine Bonaffini was the invaluable coordinator for the Seaside Gardeners of Marshfield working on this project which spanned several years. The new sign was finally finished and completed in June 2026.
