Zero Waste Boston

Zero Waste Boston Community, worker, and environmental groups together creating good green jobs for Boston through increased recycling.

Boston's diversion rate (the amount of residential trash that's diverted from incinerators or landfills to recycling, composting etc.) is low compared to other cities, and this is due to Boston not having a comprehensive recycling plan. Business waste is not regulated by the City at all. In 2010, the BRC came together to collaborate on a new Zero Waste model for Boston that uses innovative policie

s to drive up the diversion rate while creating well-paying, safe jobs for local residents, and a new revenue stream for city government. Together, we're changing how we deal with our waste, in a way that most benefits our communities, respects industry workers and protects the environment we all share.

Stark reminder of why we need to eliminate the worsening flood of plastics from our economy ASAP.

And also why 'Reduce' comes before 'Recycle' in the zero waste hierarchy... esp. when you look at who's behind some of these recycling initiatives.

In a Kenyan dump overflowing with plastic waste, waste-pickers risk disease and injury to collect precious scraps for redemption.

Go Baltimore! Citizens fighting a toxic incinerator in a community of color and replacing it with zero waste infrastructure reminds us why we do this work in Boston.

We have a long way to go, but at least the City of Boston is now committed to zero waste... it takes all of us to encourage decision-makers to get there asap.

Activists pushing for the closure of Wheelabrator Baltimore are calling for a dramatic turn toward waste reduction and diversion. Some local officials are expected to back the plan with a new resolution today.

In an era when people mistrust and mock each other so much, it's nice to find common ground... East Coast enviros and struggling small farmers in the heartland may often be at odds, but we can agree on reuse/repair and zero waste!

The right-to-repair movement has come to the heartland, where some farmers are demanding access to the software that runs their equipment.

Amidst the current recycling crises, we're working to prioritize upstream waste reduction efforts with policies like Extended Producer Responsibility.

Meantime, let's see how we can create smart local markets for recycling, like these folks in NZ!

One of the many reasons to avoid bottled water...

Studies show humans consume tens of thousands of tiny, little pieces of plastic each year known as microplastics. But if you're drinking water primarily from plastic water bottles, that number increases significantly.

Reduction and producer responsibility policies seem like the most effective ways to deal with this outrageous situation right now. Going forward we really need to rethink and grapple with our consumption habits as a society.

Way to go kid! Finally a breakthrough on marine microplastics... but Fionn is spot on that "the solution is that we stop using plastic altogether".

An 18-year-old Irish wunderkind has won the 2019 Google Science Fair grand prize for creating a method to remove microplastics from the ocean.
