Castle Island Association

Castle Island Association The Castle Island Association is a volunteer organization dedicated to preserving the rich history of Castle Island and Fort Independence.

Castle Island, connected to the mainland since 1932, is the oldest continuously fortified site in British North America, since 1634. The current fort ~ Fort independence ~ is the eighth fort to occupy the site and was commissioned into active duty in 1851. It is a System Three, pentagonal fort with corner bastions and contains over thirty two miles of hand cut Cape Ann, MA granite.
