Youth and Media at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society

Youth and Media at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society The Berkman Center’s Youth and Media project is a highly innovative educational initiative with youth involvement.

Led by John Palfrey and Urs Gasser, the Youth and Media project at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University encompasses an array of research, advocacy, and development initiatives around youth and technology. By understanding young people’s interactions with digital media such as the Internet, cell phones and video games, we seek to address the issues their practices raise,

learn how to harness the opportunities their digital fluency presents, and shape our regulatory and educational frameworks in a way that advances the public interest.

Looking for young people ages 12-18 to fill out a survey (it takes 15-20 minutes but every single entry will be extremely appreciated)! http://bit.ly/2whSdHH

The survey, created by colleagues in the UN system, will help organizations better understand how to develop programs (e.g., internships, advisory boards, co-design groups) that youth find valuable and exciting.

PLEASE participate and encourage others to participate!

We all have things that we would like to change in our communities. Maybe the bus near our house doesn’t come often enough. Maybe our schools don’t do enough to address issues that are important in our lives. Maybe the local grocery store doesn’t sell ingredients that are necessary for the kinds of…

micro-lesson from a sneak preview of our Digital Citizenship Playlist #3 on "Licensing for Digital Creators": when you parody a work, you modify it in an exaggerated way to make fun of it-- but the fair use protection you may enjoy under copyright law is no laughing matter!

Digital technologies give us many cool ways to create content. Whether we are writing code for a program that solves a problem or designing a mash-up of cheesy music videos, these technologies provide awesome ways to express ourselves and pursue our interests. But, with great power to create also co...

micro-lesson from a sneak preview of our Digital Citizenship Playlist #2 on "The Power of Resumes": Encourage students to self-reflect: "list the four most memorable experiences of your life that you have had in each category: 1) happy, 2) sad, 3) silly, and 4) serious. Then, think about how these experiences have shaped the ways you think about the future that you want for yourself. How have they impacted your ambitions? Your goals?"

We are all unique. Some of us can speak multiple languages. Others are great musicians who can play songs that move people. Still others are experts at Words with Friends or Sudoku. Not only do these skills and experiences make our lives fun and interesting, but they also may prove appealing to empl...

micro-lesson from a sneak preview of our Digital Citizenship Playlist #1 on "Building and Protecting Your Online Presence": Encourage students to talk data privacy. Here's one prompt for teens to try: "After examining your privacy settings, talk to a friend about these settings. Why do you each of you have your privacy settings the way that you have them? Are privacy settings sometimes situational (e.g., certain settings are appropriate in one case but not necessary in another)?"
