Ever listen to commercials where the drug side effects seemingly outnumber its benefits? Well, it could be a thing of the past if an Israeli research team has its way. Research Professor Saul Yedgar of Hebrew University Medical School has developed a synthetic, anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic family of drugs to combat a variety of illnesses all while avoiding the harmful side effects. Current treatment for anti-inflammatory diseases include steroids which produce significant and severe side effects. Alternative treatments are notably less effective and produce their own serious side effects. The new Israeli drug is designed synthetically and has been effective in treating anti-inflammatory and allergic conditions , including asthma and sepsis.

An Israeli refrigerator on Mars? That right. When the US space agency needed a miniature cryogenic cooler for it Curiosity rover heading to Mars it called the Israeli company Ricor Cryogenic and Vacuum Systems at Kibbutz Ein Harod Ihud. The miniature refrigerator is usually used to maintain frigid temperatures on infrared detectors used in thermal imaging and is primarily a military product. The mission to Mars required sensitive detectors to measure the planet's surface gamma rays. Because Mars has one of the solar system's hottest environments, the miniature refrigerator was the perfect solution to keep the detectors protected from the harsh temperatures. This is not Riccor's first product in space. NASA used one of their coolers on a 1994 mission and both the European space agency and the Brazilian space agency have utilized the coolers.

"Sick buildings" have met their match. The Israeli start up Better Air has invented a new way to prevent sick building syndrome. Better Air uses a filtration system that uses probiotics, or 'good bacteria' to overtake unwanted 'bad bacteria' and allergens to promote clean air in buildings. The filtration prevents air born bacteria that causes illnesses and mold. The company was founded in 2011 and its filtration system is already in use in Israeli hospitals. Better Air is also developing a filtration system for private homes that will be available by the end of the year.

Did you know that Israeli soldiers are helping American veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan heal? The American charity Heroes to Heroes brings American veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan suffering with PTSD to Israel each year to meet with Israeli veterans to educate, motivate and stimulate bonding between American veterans and Israeli veterans. Heroes to Heroes has found that meeting with the Israelis who have shared the same experiences and share the same values helps the American veterans heal their emotional wounds. The latest group of veterans visited in September--a trip that included visits to Holy sites as well as a meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu. The veterans also find understanding from everyday Israelis--as almost all Israelis are veterans having performed their required service in the IDF. Heroes to Heroes program in Israel is in such demand with American veterans, the program is seeking to increase its visits to Israel to five teams a year.

It's TEL AVIV TUESDAY! Did you know that Boston's Logan International Airport is safer because of Israeli technology? In 2007 Boston's Logan Airport became the first airport to test the Israeli company XSight System. The system uses integrated radar and electro-optical sensors to detect debris on airport runways in any kind of weather. The sensors detect debris on runways that could cause airplane damage and catastrophic airplane failures. Runway debris causes 14 billion dollars in damage annually to airplanes and in the year 2000 caused the crash of the Concorde. The XSight system meets FAA standards and is now used at the Paris, Bangkok, and Tel Aviv Airports, in addition to Boston.

Runway debris costs about $14 billion in damages yearly. That’s why the FAA likes an Israeli system to detect birds and metal fragments 24/7.
