Fewer overdose deaths is good news. It is not permission to look away.

Massachusetts estimates that opioid-related overdose deaths declined 27% in 2025, falling below 1,000 for the first time in more than a decade.

That is real progress—but the crisis cannot be measured by deaths alone.

Behind the statistics are people surviving overdoses, waiting for treatment, leaving detox without stable housing and trying to rebuild their lives while navigating disconnected systems.

Our new article explains why the next phase must focus on more than survival. It must include accessible treatment, recovery support, safe housing and practical help rebuilding stability.

The meal is served later. The work starts at 6:00 AM.

Up & At Em Community Initiative spent the morning volunteering at Haley House in Boston, helping prepare a wholesome meal for neighbors in the community.

Located in the South End, Haley House has served Boston since 1966. Its work extends beyond meals to food access, affordable housing, urban agriculture, education, training, and the creation of genuine human connection.

Haley House’s Soup Kitchen provides fresh, made-from-scratch meals six days each week:

Monday–Friday: 6:15–9:30 AM, with breakfast served from 8:00–9:30 AM
Friday afternoon: 2:15–5:30 PM
Sunday: 10:00 AM–2:30 PM, with the meal served from 12:00–1:30 PM

We are grateful for the opportunity to work beside people who understand that dignity can begin with something as simple—and as important—as a welcoming table and a good meal.

The numbers improved. The need did not disappear.

Massachusetts estimates opioid-related overdose deaths fell 27% in 2025—the first time in more than a decade that the total dropped below 1,000.

That progress deserves recognition. It also demands follow-through.

People who survive still need timely treatment, safe housing, transportation, employment support and somewhere appropriate to go after detox.

Searching for housing is stressful enough without confusing fees, rushed payment demands, or questionable apartment listings.

Before sending money:

✅ Confirm who owns or manages the property
✅ Request a written explanation of every charge
✅ Never pay simply because someone is pressuring you
✅ Get a signed and dated receipt for every payment
✅ Read the application and lease before signing
✅ Never send money without verifying the apartment and contact person

A legitimate housing opportunity should come with clear information—not threats, secrecy, or pressure to “pay immediately.”
