"How are we bringing love and resources into this context now? And what are we building towards?"โฃ

These two questions from Kohenet April N. Baskin have the power to completely shift how you show up in your family, your workplace, and your community.โฃ
Too often, we focus primarily on the problems, on what's broken. Liberatory leadership asks us to do both: reduce harm and actively create the conditions for collective thriving.โฃ

๐Ÿ’ญ Which of these questions comes more naturally to you: "What's wrong?" or "What would I love?"โฃ

"Underdogs can win. I know this terrain well." ~Kohenet April N. Baskin
Right now, on so many fronts, it feels like we are losing. The systems feel too big, the dysfunction too deep.

But if you are a child or grandchild of underdogs, you know a truth that the dominant culture wants you to forget:

We do not need the full society to change in order to powerfully move things. And, especially when properly resourced, we possess immense capacity to learn, heal, and evolve.

In what ways have you or your people been underdogs, and what do you love and admire about them?

Black History Month canโ€™t be the one month we โ€œdo raceโ€ or Black liberation at work.

If your culture canโ€™t hold repair in March, February becomes a performance.

Iโ€™ve watched well-intentioned teams plan beautiful programming, post the right quotes, invite the right speakers.

And thenโ€ฆ a conflict lands.

A micro-aggression in a meeting.

A hiring decision that somehow โ€œjust happensโ€ to replicate the same old pattern.

A staff member names harm, and suddenly the room gets quiet in that specific way that says: weโ€™re more afraid of being called out than we are committed to being changed or being in alignment with our stated values.

Hereโ€™s what Iโ€™ve learned (often the hard way):

Repair isnโ€™t an apology.

Repair is a practice, a commitment.

Itโ€™s the muscle of telling the truth without scapegoating.

Itโ€™s having agreements for how you will respond when impact and intent donโ€™t match.

Itโ€™s leaders modeling, in real time: โ€œI missed something. Iโ€™m listening. Iโ€™m accountable. We will adjust the system, not just the tone.โ€

Black history is living, breathing, and present tense.

So is Black harm.

So is Black joy.

Whatโ€™s one repair practice your team actually uses when harm happens, not just when February arrives?

Even on our best days, those sneaky inner voices shaped by oppression can show up, trying to disrupt our peace and power. But remember this: you are more than those thoughts. Your joy, purpose, and liberation are possibleโ€”even with those whispers lurking.

๐ŸŒฟ This is why I do what I do: to help brilliant, justice-seeking souls like you break through the limiting beliefs and internalized systems that hold us back. Together, we can unlearn these harmful narratives, reclaim our inherent brilliance, and co-create a path of deep joy and liberation.
