Have you spotted a rattlesnake or a northern pine snake in North Carolina? Biologists with the Wildlife Commission want to know!

Sightings of these snakes in the wild can be reported in one of two ways, via a mobile app or by email. The agency partners with the HerpMapper mobile app to track amphibian and reptile species. Download the app to your mobile device or tablet and enter information about your sighting.

If reporting by email send a photo (required), the date and time the snake was observed and location (GPS coordinates preferred) to [email protected] for Northern pine snakes and to [email protected] for rattlesnakes.

It’s that time of year again!
We are excited to be celebrating our second Founders Day for SCALE!
SCALE’s mission is to strengthen the relationship between the uninformed public and the misunderstood snake population through live education and conservation programs!
Year two of SCALE was definitely a lot more snakes and a lot more fun! We were able to have triple the amount of live shows at our first year and rescued three new snakes for recovery while relocating many others!
This Founders Day, we not only celebrate our Founder Todd Sweeney’s Birthday, we also want to celebrate all the amazing supporters that have made this past year possible!
We hope our supporters will join us in our third year of SCALE and donate towards our programs and funding for care for the SCALE Friends(our snakes)!
Please donate through CashApp and/or Venmo to help us continue to grow and support our mission! This is only the beginning of what SCALE has planned!

Been a VERY educational weekend! We can definitely say MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!! Many hearts changed, alot of folks scared of snakes getting a little gentle education, and learning that there is nothing to be afraid of! This was one of our most productive shows yet! We want to thank Mountain Readiness for the opportunity to meet and teach so many wonderful people. We can't wait for next year, and will definitely need to look into more volunteers to help with this event!

As busy as we have been, we haven't had a chance to answer some questions on our videos, we will be getting to them shortly!

SCALE Spotlight!!!

Tonight, we are going to shine the spotlight on Jessica!! She is a Harmless Albino Red Bull Snake (Pituophus catenifer sayi)

We acquired her through a bull snake breeder out of North Carolina. She will be an exceptional animal to add to our family.

While Bull snakes naturally have dark brown/black saddles along their bodies, Jessica is an albino. A genetic mutation that lacks the dark pigmentation. EVEN IN THEIR EYES!! So they are more sensitive to light than normal. This is why one of the first signs of albinism is the Red Eyes.

In this photo, you can see her practicing her defensive posture. As with all animals of the animal kingdom, they have much more predators while young. So when a big scary human approaches, they look big and scary to avoid being eaten. While she is in this defensive state, we will continue to work with her to get her ready for our public events. Once she matures to adulthood, she will have nothing to fear!

Feel free to ask any questions about Jessica or Bull snakes in general. Message us to find out about events in your area!!

February 1st is National Serpent Day!!

National Serpent Day was created to celebrate our slithery friends and recognize the growing positive dynamic of humans and snakes! SCALE’s mission is driven to promote positive interactions with serpents and to spread awareness of breaking barriers built by fear between the two species!
