TLCNJ just awarded TEN scholarships in the amount of $10,000 each to future NJ environmental leaders, and we're learning a little bit about each of these young conservationists!

Jessica Beskind is a second-year master's student in environmental planning at Rutgers University in New Brunswick. Rooted in her conservation and environmental science background, Jessica has worked on federal remediation projects across the country. Her current research examines the energy, water, waste, and land use impacts of hyperscale data centers on local communities. She also studies policy instruments to incentivize clean energy adoption in New Jersey. Outside her academic interests, Jessica recharges by exploring nature with her dogs. After graduate school, she hopes to employ science and transdisciplinary thinking to advocate for healthy ecosystems and the communities they sustain.

TLCNJ just awarded TEN scholarships in the amount of $10,000 each to future NJ environmental leaders. Let's meet these young conservationists!

Talia Barry is a third-year oceanography PhD student at Rutgers University living in Somers Point. Her research explores the predator-prey relationships on oyster reef systems, specifically the genetic mechanisms behind oyster shell strength to improve the way oysters are grown. Right now, farmed oysters are bred to be sterile and disease resistant making them a better crop, but Talia's research aims to identify ways oysters can be better shaped for restoration efforts as well. Talia's goal is to improve oyster resilience for better oyster communities, coastal ecology, and coastal protection.

TLCNJ is proud to have the largest environmental scholarship program in the state, and one of the largest in the nation. We just awarded TEN scholarships in the amount of $10,000 each to future environmental leaders who are training for careers protecting our natural resources. This year's recipients are engaged in many different important facets of research and policy that are also endlessly fascinating. Head to our blog to meet them! Link in the comments.

TLCNJ has preserved 95 acres of butterfly habitat in the Hardwick Limestone Greenway! Set amid the rapidly growing Bobcat Alley wildlife corridor and located near a tributary of the Paulins Kill River, this property is important for water quality protection and high sensitivity to pollution. The landscape is associated with rare forest communities, sinkholes, vernal pools, and high biodiversity. There are amazing rare species to be found, including unique plants that are required for many varieties of butterflies—including the plant that supports the Globally Rare and State Endangered northern metalmark butterfly. There’s still a lot of work to be done, but we’re very excited about this acquisition. Get the whole story on our blog at tlc-nj.org—link in the comments.

TLCNJ is working to save another 30,000 acres in New Jersey by the year 2050. Your contribution to our End of Fiscal Year Campaign will allow us to complete a number of important projects already under way, like saving 347 acres near the Appalachian Trail in Wantage that are part of a vast 1,000-acre marsh system. We need $200,000 to save this wonderful birding spot, which is still privately owned and unprotected. It’s home to endangered and threatened species such as Indiana and little brown bats, vesper sparrows, northern harriers, bobolink, eastern meadowlark, and bobcats. Make your gift today at bit.ly/TLCNJ2026.

Recently we spent a quiet morning at Nancy Conger West Brook Preserve, viewing the forest through the eyes of a master botanist. Dr. Linda Rohleder of Wild Woods Restoration Project shared her expert skills for recognizing native wildflowers, shrubs, and trees that define our local landscape. Our guests left with a deeper understanding of the secret language of our native flora and the vital role they play in the ecosystem we are working together to protect.

Stewardship staff and interns don’t have easy work. One of their many jobs involves taking down and putting up signs. For instance, taking down no trespassing signs, and installing Green Acres signs. This is more important work than you may realize.

We love to see the new signs go up, like these at a new preserve we're establishing in Hardwick (more exciting info about this coming soon!). And we appreciate the ones who stand in poison ivy, getting spiders in their faces while they do the dirty work!

TLCNJ is pleased to welcome Analise Draghi as a new planning fellow!. She completed her first year in Rutgers' Master's of City and Regional Planning program. Before that she earned dual degrees in environmental studies and Chinese language and culture from Lafayette College.

Analise grew up in Long Valley, where she learned to love to walk, hike, and spend time in nature—one of the reasons she is so drawn to TLCNJ. Outside of work, she is an avid reader, crafter, and thrift shopper.

TLCNJ's planning fellowship program continues to be a valuable year-long opportunity for young professionals to learn mapping and creative analysis, working with governments and communities on real-life projects that promote conservation in New Jersey. These fellows enhance the quality of our work and significantly increase the organization’s capacity.
