WHHC West Texas Aoudad Hunt
Date: February 20th-22nd, 2026
Location: Leakey, Texas
This past weekend in Leakey, Texas, donor support made it possible for combat-injured Heroes to step away from daily challenges and into an environment built around connection, purpose, and healing.
Through the combined efforts of WHHC and Retrievers for Warriors, Heroes were brought together in a shared experience that fostered camaraderie, confidence, and trust. Working alongside Terry Bland (Navy Veteran) and his team, the weekend became a powerful example of how collaboration within the veteran community amplifies impact. Every participating Hero successfully harvested an Aoudad and was able to take meat home, an achievement rooted in teamwork and renewed self-belief.
At Base camp, the focus shifted to restoration and connection. Heroes returned from the field to hot meals, a welcoming environment, and shared evenings under the Texas stars gathering around the fire, relaxing in the saltwater hot tub, and building bonds that extend well beyond the weekend. This experience was made possible through intentional preparation and care led by Theresa Houston (Army Veteran) who ensured Base camp was ready and supportive at every turn.
Additional donor generosity helped ensure long-term impact. Robert Moore (Air Force Veteran) volunteered his time to transport the Heroes trophies to a trusted taxidermist who provided a substantial discount allowing each Hero to leave with a lasting reminder of accomplishment and resilience.
Moments of quiet support mattered just as much. Throughout the weekend, Chapman the service dog provided calm, comfort, and grounding presence for Heroes when it was needed most.
This is why we do what we do, Heroes healing together, never alone.
