A CASA is a Court Appointed Special Advocate. They amplify the voices of children in foster care and help ensure they don’t fall through the cracks. 🫶 CASA volunteers are more important than ever as children are being placed in a rapidly changing, complicated child welfare system.

While kids are celebrating summer, we’re already planning for August.

Last year, YOU helped 836 students across Fannin County start school with confidence. New backpacks. Starter supplies. Fresh haircuts.

Our School Supply Drive supports all Fannin County students who need help getting ready for day one. Because every child deserves to walk into class ready to learn.

Our 2026 School Supply Drive kicks off in July. But we need to start planning NOW.

Want to get involved?
👇 Community members: Comment “SCHOOL” and we’ll message you in June when our needs list is ready.
🏢 Businesses: Host a collection box. Let’s talk!
🤝 Organizations & resource providers: We’ll have community resource vendors at this event. Sign up to host a booth here: https://forms.office.com/r/ExmMTUGj8p

Let’s help Fannin County kids start school ready to learn, not stressed about supplies.

Connection is care 💚

As we close out , Week 4 reminds us that supporting loved ones makes a real difference.

What that looks like:

Start with understanding. Supporting someone living with a serious mental illness begins with learning. When you understand mental health conditions, you can respond with empathy and confidence.
Be there in tough moments. That can mean just listening, or helping them connect to professional support. You do not have to figure this out alone.
Know that recovery is possible. Someone you love may face both a mental health condition and a substance use challenge. They deserve steady support, starting with you. With the right support, people can and do recover.
Think whole-person. Healing is not just the absence of symptoms. It is a stable home, meaningful connection, and the tools to move forward. That is the promise of whole-person care.
Mental health is for everyone. There is hope. There is help.

As we head into Memorial Day weekend, we pause to remember those who gave everything in service to our country.

We’re also grateful for a community that serves children. Because of you, kids in Fannin County have CASAs, safe interviews at our CAC, and clothes from our Rainbow Room.

Child abuse doesn’t take a holiday. If you suspect a child is being abused or neglected, report it 24/7:

At Fannin County Children’s Center, we handle hard things. Shelly Brown makes sure no one has to face them alone.

As our 2025 CAC Volunteer of the Year, Shelly is the steady presence you’ll find at our front desk — but her impact runs through every part of our Children’s Advocacy Center.

She pays attention to what others miss: crayons for a worried kid, a quiet word for a nervous client, and extra hours when the team needs backup. That’s Shelly.

When a child walks in nervous and scared, Shelly’s calm welcome is often the first step toward healing. When our staff is running on empty, her humor and grit help fill the tank back up.

She’s a gardener, a organizer, a cheerleader, and a problem-solver. But titles don’t really cover it.

Shelly is the heartbeat of our building. She reminds us daily that small acts of kindness are how big change happens.

Fannin County kids are safer because people like Shelly show up — week after week — with consistency and love.

Shelly, we are better because you’re here. Thank you for choosing to serve this community with us.

Help us flood the comments for Shelly 👇💙

Inspired to serve? Our CAC, CASA, and Rainbow Room need volunteers like you.

All of these services are completely free to the community. We’re so grateful for partners like Meredith and New Life Cottage who help strengthen families right here in Fannin County.

Words matter. Words can heal 💚

This week for , we’re focusing on how we talk about mental health.

Why it matters:
Language has power. Choosing supportive words helps people feel seen, heard, and respected. When we focus on the person and not the diagnosis, we create safer, more supportive conversations.

Mental health touches all of us, either directly or through someone we love. Let’s commit to talking about it with the care and honesty it deserves.

How to show up with words:
Celebrate people, not labels. Notice the people and moments that nurture your well-being and others’.
Speak with compassion. Respectful communication is especially important during tough transitions like housing instability or reentry into the community.

Compassionate words signal safety when people need it most.
Lead with “how can we help?” When we understand that mental health challenges can be at the root of addiction, we replace judgment with support. That question alone can make a big difference.

Recovery is possible with the right support. And it starts with how we talk to each other.

“What exactly does a CASA do?”

We get this question a lot. Here’s the answer:

A CASA is a Court Appointed Special Advocate. They are trained volunteers from right here in Fannin County who are appointed by a judge to advocate for ONE child or sibling group in foster care.

What CASAs do:
✅ Visit their child monthly and build trust
✅ Talk to teachers, therapists, foster parents, and family
✅ Review records and gather important info
✅ Write reports for the judge
✅ Speak up in court for what that child needs to be safe and thrive

What CASAs don’t need:
❌ Legal experience
❌ A social work degree

What they do need:
✅ 34 hours of training — we provide it for free
✅ A heart for kids
✅ 10 to 15 hours per month

Your local impact:
In 2025, 16 active Fannin County CASA volunteers gave 2,423 hours to advocate for 27 local children in foster care.

Across Texas, CASA volunteers served over 29,000 children last year.

Our next volunteer info session is this fall.

👇 Comment “INFO” or send us a message. No pressure, no commitment — just learn what it’s about.

Could you be the one consistent adult in a child’s life?
