Fannin County Master Gardeners

Fannin County Master Gardeners Texas Master Gardeners is a volunteer program designed to grow horticultural information throughout the state, town by town.

The Master Gardener Program is a volunteer development program offered by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and is designed to increase the availability of horticultural information and improve the quality of life through horticultural projects. To become a Texas Master Gardener, a participant attends 50 hours of instruction, conducted by the local Extension county agent, then shares this knowl

edge by donating 50 hours of volunteer service back to the community. The touch of Texas Master Gardeners’ green thumbs can be found across the state — in school garden projects, horticultural therapy projects, community gardens and demonstration gardens; by volunteers who also conduct gardening programs and answer gardening questions. Anything anyone wants to know about gardening, a Master Gardener can help. That includes young wannabe gardeners too – Master Gardeners help set up 4-H gardening clubs and Junior Master Gardener groups. In fact, when it comes to green and growing things, Master Gardeners dig into their service in all kinds of ways: teaching, giving presentations, writing newsletters and articles, providing clerical help, and designing and maintaining Web pages.

Fannin County Master Gardeners have 2 events coming up that we hope you will join us for. The first is our Winter Gardening and Bulb program that will cover extending your growing season, preparing for winter, and all things bulbs. This event will get you ready for the special guest who will be speaking during the Fannin County Fair this year, Chris Wiesinger, The Bulb Hunter, who will be presenting on Southern Bulb Gardening. We hope you will come out and grow with us!
All programming would not be possible without our gracious sponsors, including special sponsors for Mr. Wiesinger: First United Bank, Texas Farm Bureau-Fannin County, Fannin County Soil and Water District, and our hosts the Fannin County Fairm Board. Additional 2026 Sponsors are Dadant Beekeeping Supplies, 160 Lawn & Timber, Community National Bank, Legend Bank, The Nursery-Double 0 Seven Farms, Red Coop Feed & Seed, Stay Ground Coffee Cafe, and Twin Oaks Nursery & Supply,

This morning during the annual Leonard Picnic, the FCMG were happy to attend the dedication of new memorial wreath stands and laying of the wreaths at the Leonard Veteran’s Memorial. Several FCMG reside in Leonard and have been working on revitalizing this area. It was a beautiful ceremony and was well attended by the community including relatives of the fallen heroes. Thanks go out Metalworks for the wreath design and construction, Double O Seven Farms and Bear Creek Country Stores for native perennials, and and Feed Bonham for the mulch!

We are almost a week away from the FCMG Rainwater Harvest Workshop, and there is still space to join us. The optional afternoon session will be building your own rain harvesting barrel. You’ll need a plastic trash can or food safe barrel (35 gallons) and there will be supplies for sale to convert them to save and use the water. We hope to see you there!

Come out and join us for our Rainwater Harvesting Workshop on May 8, 2026 from 9 am - 12 pm. Dean Minchillo, from the Texas Water Resources Institute, will be our guest speaker talking about ways to conserve water and save money! The optional afternoon session (1:30 pm - 2:30 pm) will be constructing a rain barrel harvesting system. Kits will be available for purchase at the door, but you will need to bring your own barrel. Recommendations are for a 35 gallon plastic trash can or a plastic food grade barrel. We hope you will come out and learn with us!
