Greer Chapter was organized on December 9, 2006 by Chapter Regent Linda "Chic" Sullivan. We are a fun group of ladies that are very service oriented, through Historic Preservation, Education and Patriotism, which are the objectives of the DAR. Since our founding we have entertaine

d residents at the Clyde W. Cosper Veteran's Home in Bonham, Texas with Christmas and Valentine Parties; we have placed US Flags on the graves of the 215 Veterans buried at the Historic Wilson Chapel Cemetery in Lowry Crossing, Texas. In December 2018 we were extremely proud to host the Wreaths Across America Ceremony at Wilson Chapel Cemetery as we honored those who had served and are now at eternal rest. We are already planning the ceremony for December 18, 2021 at 11:00am. In January of 2018 our Chapter was honored to place a World War I Memorial Monument in the Constitution Wall Plaza on the grounds of the Collin County Courthouse, hosting a Commemorative Ceremony on the 100th Anniversary of the end of WWI on November 10, 2018. We were honored to work with the Collin County Commissioners Court, as they allowed us to place this monument, along with a World War II Memorial Monument and a Korean War Memorial Monument, both placed in May 2019. A Ceremony was hosted by the Chapter at Collin County Courthouse on June 9, 2019 to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. Our Chapter raised funds and have now ordered a Vietnam Memorial Monument to be placed at the Collin County Courthouse in the Spring of 2021. These monuments are to "Honor All Who Served". Our Chapter is active in our local community, as we participate in the DAR Day of Service, providing snacks and gifts to our first responders in the Anna and Melissa area. We have also spent hours at Wilson Chapel Cemetery cleaning off the grave sites. Constitution Week Proclamations are received from the Mayors of the three cities we serve, Anna, Melissa and Blue Ridge. A Flag Day Ceremony was hosted at the Melissa Municipal Building on Flag Day in June, which is always opened to the public. Members have volunteered regularly at the Melissa Public Library assisting visitors with their genealogy research. (Volunte
ering in the library was done pre-covid)

Our members actively participate within our Chapter, State and National Society. Members regularly attend the Texas State Fall Forum held in Austin, Texas, the Dallas Area Regents Council, Dallas Area Constitution Luncheon, Texas State Conference held annually in Texas, and attend the National Continental Congress held in Washington, D.C., annually in June. Our Chapter was awarded 1st place by the Texas State Society for our WWI Commemorative Event, 1st place in the South Central Division, allowing us to compete at the National Level, where we placed 3rd at National for the Best Lasting World War I Memorial. We were so honored to receive this recognition for the WWI Memorial we placed at the Collin County Courthouse. We are excited about our service to America as we continue to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. For more information on DAR go to dar.org and you can email the John F. What an amazing (and hot) day!! On Saturday, April 25, 2026, the John F. Greer Chapter marked the grave of Edith (Eda) Sparks Simmons, the daughter of Revolutionary War Soldier and Patriot William Sparks. William served at the age of 17, serving in NC until the war was over. He moved with his family from NC to GA and at age 30 he married. Edith was the 5th child of seven children from this marriage. William Sparks moved to the area of Nacogdoches, Texas in March of 1836! (Texas before it was Texas) Edith and her husband James Simmons married in Mississippi, and are found on the 1850 and 1860 in Rusk County, Texas and listed in Precinct 1 (McKinney) Collin County, Texas in 1870. They had been married 50 years when James died in 1870. Edith lived to be almost 87, passing away in 1897. Linda Dillard discovered Edith Sparks Simmons while researching her daughter-in-laws family lineage to submit her DAR Application. Descendants of Edith Sparks Simmons in attendance were her 3rd Great Granddaughter Carrie Croan Bieda, Carrie’s daughter, MaKenzie Spruiell West a 4th great granddaughter, Makenzie’s son, Rookie West, the 5th Great Grandson. A big thanks to our guest speaker, TXDAR State Regent, Susan Johnston, who spoke on the America 250! anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence! It was wonderful!! TXDAR State Recording Secretary Kim Clark, and TXDAR Historian Karen McCloskey were in attendance. Many National Chairs, National Vice Chairs, State Chairs and State Vice Chairs were also in attendance, along with our District III Director Missy McPherson. Members from across the metroplex attended and we are so pleased they were able to be with us. The Northern Region SAR Color Guard presented the colors, enriching this event. Many thanks to all who contributed to this event! Photo credit to “Missy” Melissa Wilkinson. And thank you to all who attended! I hope this dedication ceremony will inspire other to commemorate their heritage!
