What an amazing (and hot) day!! On Saturday, April 25, 2026, the John F. Greer Chapter marked the grave of Edith (Eda) Sparks Simmons, the daughter of Revolutionary War Soldier and Patriot William Sparks. William served at the age of 17, serving in NC until the war was over. He moved with his family from NC to GA and at age 30 he married. Edith was the 5th child of seven children from this marriage. William Sparks moved to the area of Nacogdoches, Texas in March of 1836! (Texas before it was Texas) Edith and her husband James Simmons married in Mississippi, and are found on the 1850 and 1860 in Rusk County, Texas and listed in Precinct 1 (McKinney) Collin County, Texas in 1870. They had been married 50 years when James died in 1870. Edith lived to be almost 87, passing away in 1897. Linda Dillard discovered Edith Sparks Simmons while researching her daughter-in-laws family lineage to submit her DAR Application. Descendants of Edith Sparks Simmons in attendance were her 3rd Great Granddaughter Carrie Croan Bieda, Carrie’s daughter, MaKenzie Spruiell West a 4th great granddaughter, Makenzie’s son, Rookie West, the 5th Great Grandson. A big thanks to our guest speaker, TXDAR State Regent, Susan Johnston, who spoke on the America 250! anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence! It was wonderful!! TXDAR State Recording Secretary Kim Clark, and TXDAR Historian Karen McCloskey were in attendance. Many National Chairs, National Vice Chairs, State Chairs and State Vice Chairs were also in attendance, along with our District III Director Missy McPherson. Members from across the metroplex attended and we are so pleased they were able to be with us. The Northern Region SAR Color Guard presented the colors, enriching this event. Many thanks to all who contributed to this event! Photo credit to “Missy” Melissa Wilkinson. And thank you to all who attended! I hope this dedication ceremony will inspire other to commemorate their heritage!
