Members of the Southern Oregon horse and Carriage Club got together for a ride in Chiloquin on May 30. Driving horses also benefit from all types of exposure, including riding. We are fortunate to have our member, Judi Dunn, also the active captain of the Klamath County Sheriff's Posse, top- notch carriage driver, brought her 4 posse-trained draft horses to the Jacobus horse park & 3 friends rode the extras. If the 3 Shires look like a drill team that's because the are! Safe for anyone to ride, they are presented in Parades any other posse activities working together as team. Morgan, the Clydesdale, a former driving horse is just learning how posse horses behave. They also all drive & Judi does parades driving them as well!
Callie, the Haflinger, hopefully future driving pony, is getting more socialization with every exposure. We live in an isolated area so getting her out and about with all the excitement is very positive.
The property, a private horse park, is adjacent to Train Mountain. Set across 2,200 acres of ponderosa pine forest and flats, Train Mountain features over 36 miles of 7.5-inch gauge track and holds the Guinness World Record for the Longest Miniature Hobby Railroad-- we have permission to ride designated dirt roads on the property. We got to see two of the little trains going along the track!
We left the peace of the forest to ride around the many acres burned clear by a forest fire a few years ago. Now it is home to manzanita, bitter brush and a variety of wildflowers and grasses rolling in the wind like ripples on a lake. My Callie was amazed at the whole setup.
When we got back to the camp Lenayah harnessed little Peanut & several, one a neophyte, took a turn driving him. It was a great day, good people, good horses and a pretty sky.
