Commitment to Sustainability
The top priority of ERSLA on any project in which we are involved is sustainability. To factor the sustainability of a project, we use a simple formula. If a project is completely sustainable, it is 100% community based. That would mean if there was a wall built around the community, or a situation that cut the community off from its' surroundings, the project would c
ontinue. So what normally weakens a project from being completely in a sustainable framework? If a project requires continuous updates of information from outside the community it can weaken the system. For example: Computer or highly technological solutions for problems in remote regions of the world may not be the best ideas for an area due to upgrading software, training issues, etc. If a project depletes resources whether they be financial material or natural, will significantly reduce the long term sustainability. If a program is implemented that requires power and water supplied by the municipality, but there is not a system to increase the tax revenue, or other source of income to pay for such services-Or if a project is introduced that requires burning wood for fires without having a reforestation element are examples of projects that will eventually fail. Another weakness in a program can be if material are constantly having to be incorporated from external suppliers. If there is not an effort to create manufacturing using available resources, the community will always be dependent on others. Of course, 100% sustainability is not possible with most projects, but to strive for improvement is crucial.
