Things Every Child Should Get to Say

“I have people I can count on”

Supportive relationships with family members, friends, and trusted adults help children feel connected, valued, and secure. By building strong relationships and creating opportunities for connection, we can help ensure children across Idaho have people they know they can depend on.

What is one way you help build supportive connections for the children in your life?

💙 MEET OUR GRANT PARTNERS: Upper Valley Child Advocacy Center (UVCAC)

Upper Valley CAC started in 2015 as a small program under the umbrella of another agency. After years of steady growth, in 2018, they officially became their own nonprofit. Their mission is to help meet the needs to children and families in the community by utilizing a collaborative approach for the identification, prevention, investigation, prosecution, and treatment of child abuse.

Their program, Safer, Smarter Kids, is a school-based abuse prevention curriculum series for pre-kindergarten through grade 12. The curriculum is focused around educationally sound and developmentally appropriate content used to arm children with the tools and language they need to better protect themselves from abuse.

“Prevention is intervention”

Camille, one of UVCAC’s education coordinators, shares what she finds most meaningful about her work:

“The most meaningful part of my work is helping children and families feel supported and not alone during the criminal justice process. I also enjoy teaching prevention skills to the elementary aged children in the area and watching them learn how to use their voice to stand up for themselves.”

UVCAC's message to Idaho families:

“We believe that every child deserves to be heard, understood, and believed.”

To UVCAC, prevention provides children and their caregivers with the tools and resources to recognize unsafe situations, speak up, and get the help they may need.

💙 We’re proud to support Upper Valley Child Advocacy Center and their commitment to strengthening children, building community, and creating educational opportunities for families.️

👏 Thank you, Upper Valley Child Advocacy Center, for the work you do to make prevention possible!

Things Every Child Should Get to Say

“I can ask for help”

Children are more likely to reach out when they know there are caring people ready to listen and support them. By making help-seeking feel safe and normal, we can help Idaho children know they do not have to navigate challenges alone.

What is one way you show the children in your life that it is okay to ask for help?

💙 MEET OUR GRANT PARTNERS: Center for New Directions at North Idaho College
Since the late 1970s, the Center for New Directions (CND) at North Idaho College has provided a safe and supportive space for people rebuilding their lives through education, career advancement, and personal development.

Today, CND primarily serves single mothers in North Idaho. While their work may not always look like traditional child abuse and neglect prevention, their approach is simple:

When we support the parent, we support the entire family.

Through education and workforce readiness, workshops, family events, and opportunities to build community, CND helps parents develop the confidence, skills, and stability they need to create meaningful change for themselves and their children.

Louisa Rogers, the current lead for the CND program, shares a story about one participant's to illustrates that impact:

“When she first came to CND, she was experiencing homelessness and her children were in foster care. She wanted to find a career that would allow her to earn enough income to secure housing and bring her children home.
She chose to pursue her commercial driver's license, worked hard, earned her CDL, and found a job. With additional community support to help with her first month's rent, she was able to establish stable housing – and her children soon came home.

But her journey didn't stop there.

She continued participating in CND workshops, connected with other mothers, and eventually became a mentor to women just beginning their own journeys. Today, she has built financial stability, created savings, and is no longer living in survival mode”

From participant to mentor. That is prevention in action.

📊 During the past school year, CND worked with 240 participants – who together have 443 children.

As CND reminds us, “Although we are working directly with the parent, the children are impacted by the support the parent receives.”
And their message to Idaho families is one we can all take to heart:

“Showing up to events and not knowing anyone – it can feel scary. Do it anyway! Having community – finding your tribe – it is so important...Humans are meant to be in relationships with one another. Find your people. It is worth the effort and the discomfort.”

We’re proud to support the Center for New Directions and their commitment to strengthening parents, building community, and creating opportunities for families to thrive. ❤️

👏 Thank you, Center for New Directions, for the work you do to make prevention possible!

Things Every Child Should Get to Say

“My feelings matter”

Helping children recognize, express, and manage their emotions supports healthy social and emotional development. When adults respond with patience and understanding, children can learn that their feelings are important and that they have support working through them.

What is one way you help children feel comfortable expressing their emotions?
