The People of The Peregrine Fund: Emma Heydenberk, Seasonal California Condor Field Biologist

For three winters now, Emma Heydenberk has found a home on our California Condor team during the busy fall and winter seasons, when we release around a dozen captive-bred condors and trap and test as many others as possible to test them for lead exposure. The resilience of the bird and the crew keeps bringing Emma back year after year.

Conserving Ridgway's Hawks often means climbing tall palm trees to monitor nests—and doing that safely takes serious training.

For the second year in a row, we partnered with the U.S. Forest Service to bring four expert tree-climbing safety trainers to the Dominican Republic. Over the course of a week, ten climbers and three additional team members worked through an intensive course covering knot systems, anchor techniques, equipment care, rescue procedures, and more.

It's the kind of rigorous, hands-on preparation that protects our team in the field and builds skills they'll carry with them for life.

The White-necked Hawk is a poorly studied raptor found only within a limited range in Brazil's Atlantic Forest.

Near Threatened and rarely encountered, scientists still don't have basic details about its nesting habits—where it builds its nest, how many eggs it lays, or how long its young remain in the nest before fledging.

Sometimes the most fascinating thing about a species is how much we still have left to learn!

📰 New Publication

A comprehensive study published in Bird Conservation International reveals critical gaps in bird monitoring across Africa that are limiting conservation efforts. Researchers surveyed 46 African countries and found that while valuable monitoring programs exist, major barriers—including funding shortages, lack of trained analysts, and inadequate data infrastructure—hinder their effectiveness and sustainability.

Endangered Species Day 🦅

Endangered Species Day is an opportunity for us to pause and reflect on our successes, give thanks to the partners and supporters who made those triumphs possible, and look ahead to the species still requiring our attention. The Peregrine Fund remains committed to conserving raptors worldwide, and each year we're proud to celebrate how far we've come.

Despite the difficult breeding season for the Secretarybird in northern Tanzania, our camera traps continue to provide valuable insights into how biotic interactions can influence the occupancy of potentially suitable nesting sites.
In this video it is possible to observe how the same resource can be shared and contested by different species, highlighting its ecological importance. Secretarybirds and Lappet-faced Vultures, both endangered raptors, use the same tree species and often even the same individual tree for nesting or roosting across the Serengeti ecosystem. This can generate competition over a limited resource between two large raptors with very different ecological requirements, sometimes resulting in conflicts where only one species ultimately prevails.
Biotic interactions are often overlooked, yet they play a fundamental role in shaping biological communities.
