On this day, we remember Deputy U.S. Marshal William “Bill” Degan, who was shot and killed while conducting a peaceful surveillance mission at Ruby Ridge, Idaho.

Deputy Marshal Degan was the most decorated member in the history of the U.S. Marshals Service. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

Years later, his wife said, “Whenever men who spend their lives serving the country are killed in the line of duty, we all lose a piece of ourselves. I lost a bigger piece than others in August of 1992.”

Today, we remember Latah County Sheriff's Office Deputy Wallace Cool. On August 5, 1901, Deputy Cool died from wounds sustained the previous day after being shot by an armed suspect in Moscow. The gunman had already killed the town doctor and wounded another civilian before encountering Deputy Cool and shooting him from his horse.

The suspect was killed later that day during a shootout with a posse.

Today, we remember Deputy Cool and honor his service and sacrifice.

Note: As we continue our line of duty remembrance series, we realized we missed several anniversary dates earlier this month. While these posts may be a few days late, the service and sacrifice of these fallen law enforcement officers deserve to be remembered -- each fallen officer will still have their own dedicated post in the days to come.
