On July 27th, 1921, at the University of Toronto, scientists Sir Frederick Banting and Charles H. Best successfully isolated the hormone insulin for the first time.

Before their breakthrough, a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes was a death sentence, particularly for children. The work of Banting and Best, under the guidance of Professor J.J.R. Macleod, offered the first real hope. Their discovery paved the way for insulin therapy, a treatment that has saved countless lives and remains one of the most significant medical achievements of the 20th century.

A truly revolutionary moment in the history of medicine.
