With Father's Day approaching, we'll be highlighting why neutering male cats is SO important!

While male cats don't help raise kittens, an unneutered tomcat can father an astonishing number of kittens throughout his lifetime, contributing to pet overpopulation and the ongoing community cat crisis.

Unneutered males are also more likely to roam, fight with other cats, and suffer injuries such as bite wounds and abscesses. These fights are one of the primary ways diseases like FIV can be transmitted between cats.

Neutering helps cats live healthier, safer lives while preventing countless unwanted litters from being born outdoors.

It took decades. It took thousands of advocates, countless court cases, and years of campaigning at statehouses across the country. But as of May 2026, every single state in the United States now treats intentional animal torture as a felony on the first offense.

The final piece of the puzzle was Iowa.

Before Governor Kim Reynolds signed House File 2348 into law, Iowa was the only state where the most extreme acts of deliberate cruelty against companion animals carried only a misdemeanor charge. That created a legal gap that animal welfare groups had been fighting to close for years.

Now that gap is closed. For cats, dogs, and other companion animals across all 50 states, there is finally a baseline of legal protection that carries real consequences.

The significance of this should not be understated. A felony charge means potential prison time, significant financial penalties, potential loss of the right to own animals, and a permanent criminal record. That is a very different outcome compared to what many abusers faced before these laws were updated across the country.

Experts have long pointed out that animal cruelty is frequently a warning sign for other forms of violence. Law enforcement professionals, criminologists, and mental health experts have documented the link between people who harm animals and escalating violence toward people. Treating animal cruelty as a serious crime serves public safety, not just animal welfare.

The road to this milestone was not fast or easy. But the finish line has been crossed.
