Under Greenleaf's Animal Policy, police do not shoot cats, but the city can humanely euthanize trapped cats without microchips after scanning them. Details of the Greenleaf Animal PolicyEuthanasia for Unchipped Cats: The city or its agents scan trapped cats for microchips; any cat found without a microchip is deemed unowned, treated as feral, and subjected to humane euthanasia following standard guidelines. No Shooting by Police: Municipal policy does not authorize police officers to shoot cats; rather, it provides for contract trapping and humane euthanasia for population control in acute situations. Property Owner Rules: Private property owners may eliminate feral cats on their own property using lawful and humane means at their own risk, but they must follow local firearm and BB gun discharge laws and remain liable for unintended consequences like harming a pet. Nuisance Penalties: Providing food, water, or shelter that creates a feral cat habitat is considered a public nuisance, carrying potential civil and criminal penalties.

Pet Tips for Wildfire Smoke

When bad air quality or wildfire smoke hits, our pets can be just as sensitive to poor air as we are—especially brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds, seniors, and pets with asthma or heart conditions.

Here are 4 quick tips to protect your pets when the Air Quality Index (AQI) spikes:

Keep Walks Short: Save the long runs or games of fetch for better air days. Stick to brief bathroom breaks outside.

Create a Clean Zone Indoors: Keep windows and doors closed. Run an air purifier with a HEPA filter if you have one!

Wipe 'Em Down: Particles can settle on their fur. Give their paws and coat a quick wipe with a damp towel when they come inside.

Watch for Warning Signs: Call us right away if you notice excessive coughing, wheezing, gagging, watery eyes, or unusual lethargy.

Stay safe and breathe easy! Call/Text your vet if you see any of the warning signs with your pet.

Would you open your heart and your home to a cat who had been left behind in an empty house after her family moved away? 🐾💔

Imagine being left behind in the only home you've ever known. The familiar voices are gone. The rooms grow quiet. The food bowl stays empty. Every passing day, you wait by the door, hoping the people you loved will come back.

Sadly, this is the heartbreaking reality for some cats. When families move away, they are sometimes abandoned to fend for themselves in empty homes, confused and frightened, with no idea why the people they trusted disappeared.

Despite that unimaginable heartbreak, many of these cats still find the courage to trust again. With patience, kindness, and a safe place to call home, they slowly begin to believe that not every goodbye is forever.

Opening your home to an abandoned cat is about so much more than providing food and shelter. It is about giving a vulnerable soul a second chance, replacing fear with security, and proving that there are still people who keep their promises.

Every cat deserves a family that chooses them for life, not just until life becomes inconvenient.
