Idaho family physicians are attending the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) 2026 Congress of Delegates, helping shape the future of family medicine and ensuring Idaho's voice is heard on the national stage.

Representing Idaho are Delegates Suzanne Allen, MD, and Brandon Mickelsen, DO, along with Alternates John Williams, MD, and Boyd Southwick, DO.

Also joining the group are Lauren Hutchinson, newly elected American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Student Board Member from Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine - ICOM, and Derek Southwick, MD, outgoing Resident Board Member.

What does Proposition One address?

The Reproductive Freedom and Privacy Act addresses reproductive health care decisions including contraception, fertility treatment, childbirth care, miscarriage care, continuing a pregnancy, and abortion. It also addresses the confidentiality of the patient-provider relationship and an individual’s ability to make reproductive health care decisions.

The IAFP Board voted to endorse the measure in May 2025 based on its potential impact on the physician-patient relationship, Idaho’s physician workforce, and access to high-quality care.

Following careful deliberation, the IAFP Board voted to endorse Proposition One (the Reproductive Freedom and Privacy Act) in May 2025.

Why the IAFP Supports Proposition One:

- Protecting the Physician-Patient Relationship: Ensuring complex, private medical choices remain between a patient, their family, and their doctor.

- Recruitment and Retention: Supporting the vital pipeline, recruitment, and retention of family physicians and graduate medical education in Idaho.

- Advocating for High-Quality Care: Promoting Family Medicine as the foundation of health care and advocating for policy initiatives that improve health outcomes for all Idahoans.
