For decades, traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) have largely been classified as “mild,” “moderate,” or “severe.” But these three labels don’t tell the whole story.

Two people with the same classification can have very different injuries, symptoms, and recovery experiences. A better system is needed; one that reflects the complexity of brain injury and helps advance more personalized care and research.

A new international framework, CBI-M, offers a more comprehensive approach to characterizing TBI. Rather than relying primarily on a single measure of injury severity, CBI-M considers four areas: clinical, biomarkers, imaging, and modifiers. Together, these elements provide a more complete picture of what happened to the brain.

Better classification can lead to better understanding, and ultimately better care for brain injury survivors. More precise characterization can help clinicians identify differences between injuries, support more individualized treatment, and help researchers design stronger clinical studies.

For people living with brain injury, that progress matters and makes a real difference.

CBI-M is an important step toward a future in which every brain injury can be understood more completely, and every person can receive care informed by the full picture of their injury.

The medical community is moving towards a new TBI classification system that is expected to lead to more accurate diagnoses and better treatment plans.

Brain Injury Fundamentals Virtual Training

Brain Injury Fundamentals is a foundational training and certificate program designed for individuals who support people with brain injuries, including non-licensed direct care staff, facility personnel, first responders, and other community members.
