Winter can be a tricky time when it comes to child safety. Wearing heavy coats and blankets in a car seat creates extra space between the child and the harness. This causes a loose fit, putting the child at risk for injury in the event of a crash. The best practice is to secure the child in a properly fitted harness, and then cover the child with a blanket or coat.

The safest place for your baby to sleep is in the same room as you, but in their own separate sleep space, for at least the first 6 months. Sharing a bed with your baby significantly increases the risk of sleep-related injury or death. Adult mattresses, pillows, and blankets can create dangerous conditions, increasing the chances of suffocation or rebreathing carbon dioxide. A firm, safety-approved crib or bassinet offers the best protection for your baby during sleep.

October is Safe Sleep Month!

The safest sleep position for your baby is always on their back, for every nap and bedtime. Sleeping face-down can trap air around their nose or mouth, increasing the risk of rebreathing carbon dioxide instead of oxygen. This danger is heightened when sleeping on a soft surface, with blankets, or in a smoke-filled environment. Always choose safe sleep practices to protect your baby.

Today’s post is all about crib placement safety.

Even if they are still tiny and in the crib there are safety precautions you can take.

✅Ensure the safe sleep space is well away from any windows and at least a foot from other furniture.

✅Cords should be minimum 3 feet away or affixed to the wall in such a way that baby can’t access them.

✅Avoid hanging anything above the crib (whether on the wall or ceiling) to ensure nothing can fall in.

“Crib placement. Unless you don’t mind a bit of redecorating and rearranging when your baby starts to get around, we suggest you place your crib well away from any windows and no less than an arm’s reach away from any nearby dressers or table-tops. Knowing that it won’t be long before anything and everything within reach will be fair game, we also recommend limiting your over-the-crib wall decorations to painted walls and wallpaper. Picture frames and mirrors over cribs are often an accident waiting to happen. Be forewarned that even paper borders placed within reach of the crib, while safe, don’t often stand up well to prying fingers.”

“To prevent the most serious of falls and to keep children from getting caught in cords from hanging window blinds or draperies and strangling, don’t place a crib—or any other child’s bed—near a window. The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends using cordless window coverings if possible.”

Today’s topic is Bumpers.
Do NOT use bumpers or liners of any kind as they aren’t safe nor are they necessary.

The hazards:
🚨Suffocation
🚨Strangulation
🚨Choking
🚨Entrapment
🚨Falls in older infants who used them to climb

As of June 2011 cribs manufactured in the USA have been required to limit crib slat spacing to no more than 2 3/8 inches apart to prevent head entrapments which had previously occurred, leading to death – the reason bumpers were even created.

Since that change (which has now been adopted in most countries) bumpers and liners are no longer necessary.

The Safe Sleep for Babies Act banned all types of bumpers except for mesh liners, making them illegal to manufacture, sell, or even give away. Yes, even on marketplace platforms!

Mesh bumpers were involved in 13% of incident reports between 2008 and 2019.

Limbs going through the slats are typically more of an annoyance than anything else. On a few occasions in the rare instances that slats are closer together it may cause a bruise or in rare cases if entrapped, a broken bone.

Still worried?
✅ Wearable blankets or “sleep sacks” can help limit the likelihood of legs going through
✅ A play yard or “pack n play” can be used instead of a crib and are safe for sleep as long as they pass the necessary safety standard.

More facts!

Pacifiers have been found to be protective against SIDS.

☑️ Offer it but don’t force it.

☑️ Ensure you know your babies feeding cues so you’re not offering pacifier instead of feeding.

☑️ Use a pacifier for the correct age (per the manufacturer) and replace per the manufacturer instructions.

☑️ Check pacifier for any tears before offering to baby.

☑️ Protection still occurs if pacifier falls out during sleep.

❌ Don’t use pacifiers attached to toys or clips for sleep.

❌ Don’t use teethers for sleep.

❌ Don’t try to turn a pacifier into a teether by adding water and freezing it (or freezing it without liquid) this can ruin the integrity and make it crack.

❌ Don’t cut the pacifier and offer it back to the child as a way to wean from the pacifier.
