Last minute volunteer opportunity!

We could use 2 more people for our Loon Creek trailproject in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness starting next week, June 3-10.

The rugged landscape around Loon Creek is defined by towering peaks, deep canyons, and the legendary Middle Fork of the Salmon River.

Working on the Loon Creek Trail #4101 and/or other area trails, our crew will focus on essential maintenance to keep this wilderness corridor open and accessible. Come prepared for a week of rewarding work, breathtaking scenery, and camaraderie.

This trip is rated moderate/strenuous.

SBFC's Rivers & Stock Crew met up last week in Salmon and at Corn Creek for a few days of training to kick off their season.

We are excited to again host River Checkers at Boundary Creek & Corn Creek on the Middle Fork & Main Salmon, as well as volunteers (new!) this year at Indian Creek. We'll also have two River Rangers working side-by-side with USFS rangers on the Salmon River system.

New this year-- We also hired a stock assistant to work with the Salmon-Challis National Forest on their stock program.

Welcome to:
Ben (River Checker)
Codi (River Checker)
Deanna (River Checker)
John (River Checker)
Brian (River Ranger)
Jenny (River Ranger)
Clarinne (Stock Assistant)

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been bombarded with questions about SBFC's position on the recent signing of the Minimum Requirements Analysis for chainsaw use on certain trails in the Frank Church- River of No Return Wilderness.

SBFC is a wilderness stewardship organization with “Frank Church” in our name, so people naturally want to know our stance and what “side” we are on. The us-vs.-them narrative on this subject, and so many others in our country, can be incredibly strong.

SBFC has never been about us vs. them. We are a non-advocacy, boots-on-the-ground stewardship organization. We recruit hundreds of volunteers and hire dozens of seasonal staff and interns each year to get an incredible amount of work done in the Selway-Bitterroot, Frank Church, and surrounding wildlands. One of our strengths is that we won’t play into the us-versus-them narrative. It’s not what we do.

But, for those wondering, what is SBFC's position on this “in the news” topic?

The short answer is: SBFC is laser-focused on wilderness stewardship. For us, wilderness stewardship means we’ll be using traditional non-motorized / non-mechanized tools when working in the wilderness, whether removing logs from the 8 ft wide trail corridor, removing brush, kicking rocks off the tread, or repairing the tread itself.

New Volunteer Opportunity!

Join the U.S. Forest Service - Salmon-Challis National Forest, along with SBFC & Idaho Trails Association, for a National Trails Day project on Saturday, June 6 on the Langer Lake Trail (near Stanley, ID).

Work will include cutting trees blocking the trail, removing brush from the trail corridor, and fixing issues with the trail surface. This will be a moderate intensity hike/workday.

Hitch Report: Selway River Trail #4 & Mink Peak Trail #438

Nearly 300 trees were cleared from the trail corridor in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness! 🌲🪚

Our crew recently wrapped up a hitch on the #4 Selway River and #438 Mink Peak trails, where the work was both rewarding and rugged. Crews tackled retread, brushing, and logout through increasingly difficult conditions as the trail became harder to follow and, in places, nearly impassable as they climbed up near 5,000 ft working towards the junction with Highline Ridge Trail #626.

Between heavy log piles, disappearing tread, and dense brush, progress was hard-earned, but the team successfully cut through every log blocking the corridor between the river and the trail junction. There’s still plenty of retread work to do, but thanks to this crew, the trail is once again passable for wilderness travelers.

SBFC crews have worked on the trails in the high country a few miles away in the past few seasons. The effort to tie this work together will be massive, but we hope to get it done and make the connection hikeable once again!
