Les Bois Recorder Society is a Boise local chapter that is affiliated with the American Recorder Society nationally. LBRS promotes and helps increase awareness of the beauty and artistry of the recorder as both a historical and modern musical instrument. Often seen by many as only a pre-band elementary school instrument, the recorder is easy to play, but can be challenging for an entire life-time
learning to play well. The world of recorders are so vastly varied and diverse in contrast to the limited image of a plastic soprano recorder used in many elementary schools. Recorders come in 8 sizes ranging from garklein sopranino (about 7 inches), sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor, bass, great bass and contra bass (over 6 foot tall), as well as in Baroque, Renaissance or Medieval styles, often tuned to a pitch of 440 = A, but can also be pitched to 415, etc., and is created in a wide assortment of woods as well as plastic, etc. Recorders can be played in both consorts (groups using various sizes of recorders at the same time, e.g. soprano, alto, tenor and bass quartets) as well as in broken consorts (groups using recorders with other time period instruments such as harpsichord, viola da gamba, lute, etc.)
